Examining the Criterion Validity of CBCL and TRF Problem Scales and Items in a Large Singapore Sample

Abstract: This study examined the criterion validity of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and Teacher's Report Form (TRF) problem scales and items in demographically-matched Singapore samples of referred and non-referred children (840 in each sample for the CBCL and 447 in each sample for the TRF). Internal consistency estimates for both the CBCL and TRF scales were good. Almost all CBCL and TRF problem scales and items significantly discriminated between referred and non-referred children, with referred children scor… Show more

“…In addition to internalizing and externalizing subscales, the CBCL is made up of eight subscales (anxious/depressed, somatic complaints, withdrawn/depressed, social problems, thought problems, attention problems, delinquent behaviors, and aggressive behaviors). Validity and reliability for the CBCL is well established in the extant literatureincluding excellent internal consistency (Ang et al, 2011; Ebesutani et al, 2010; Kendall et al, 2007). 6 …”

“…[28][29][30] Multivariate ANCOVAs (MANCOVAs), all of which had a 3 (weight category) × 2 (gender) × 3 (age groups 6-9, 10-13, 14-16) design were run for internalizing and externalizing problems and the eight empirically based syndromes. Alpha was set at p < .01 to take into account the multiple analyses.…”
