ResumenSe presenta un análisis e interpretación de dos contextos líticos arcaicos situados en la costa árida del norte de Chile, en la localidad de Taltal (Región de Antofagasta). Uno de los sitios (228/230), corresponde a un asentamiento fechado alrededor de 5000 años AP, mientras que el otro (226-5), permitió obtener fechas que lo sitúan en momentos anteriores a 10.000 años AP, constituyendo unas de las fechas más tempranas para esta parte de la costa del Norte Grande de Chile Los conjuntos artefactuales se caracterizan por intensas actividades de manufactura y utilización de instrumentos líticos, en el contexto de estrategias logísticas y residenciales de movilidad y uso del territorio en el espacio costero y ámbitos territoriales cercanos (p.e., pampas interiores), procesos enfocados en el aprovechamiento de recursos en dicha localidad.Palabras claves: cazadores recolectores -contextos líticos -materias primas de alta calidad -tecnología bifacial -movilidad -asentamientocosta árida -Taltal -norte de Chile. AbstractWe present an analysis and interpretation from two archaic lithic contexts located in the arid coast of Northern Chile (Taltal, II region). 228/230 site was dated around 5000 years BP and 226-5 site was dated prior to 10.000 years BP, giving the earliest dates for human occupations from coastal Northern Chile. Artifactual assemblages suggest the development of intense stone tool making and wear activities in the context of logistical and residential mobility and land -use patterns in coastal and surrounding inner areas (pampas), through processes focused in resource utilization from this locality.

There are more areas of overlap as well as distinction between the Reduction Sequence and Chaîne Opératoire methods of archaeological analysis than the current debate recognizes. While methodological differences have been acknowledged, high-level theory differs to a greater degree than is currently appreciated, partly due to the social practice of archaeology in different contexts. This paper compares and evaluates examples of reduction sequence and chaîne opératoire research to demonstrate how high-level theory goals impact middle-range theory and even low-level theory practices (i.e., how data are constructed and published). The paper then utilizes the distinction between an emic decision hierarchy and an etic production hierarchy to elucidate how the practitioners of both methods can more successfully integrate their approaches. An alternative to both methods is offered to demonstrate how common epistemological problems can be resolved. As an example of this alternative approach, the paper compares blank production behaviors and tool kit morphologies among Levantine Ahmarian, as well as among Levantine Aurignacian assemblages, from Kebara Cave, Israel. This case study demonstrates that the two Ahmarian assemblages are more different, rather than more similar to each other, in comparison to the Levantine Aurignacian assemblages. This suggests that a typological approach to these assemblages conceals significant behavioral data.
