The Chinese authorities have formulated a vision for the global future that it terms ‘ecological civilization’ (shengtai wenming 生态文明). It was introduced into Communist Party ideology in 2007 and endorsed by Xi Jinping in 2013 as a major framework for the country’s environmental policies. During the 2000s, the government set in motion many stricter environmental regulations and targets in line with this vision, including opening up some new room for bottom-up, volunteer-driven initiatives mostly on waste collection, recycling, education, and sustainable agriculture. At the same time, it calls for more participation of women in environmental governance at grassroots levels. Surveys in different parts of the world, including China, have suggested that women tend to be more concerned with environmental issues than men, but we have few qualitative studies in China of this topic. This article details three case studies in which women have initiated environmental projects in their local communities. They have mobilized other women (and some men) to engage in collective action, and they have generated financial and symbolic resources for their projects. We analyse these cases and argue that by raising the status of environmental issues such as waste collection and recycling, previously often downplayed as “women’s affairs”, China’s environmental turn has helped expand the space available for female subjectivities and participation in public activities. However, this expanding role has not translated into better representation or participation of women at higher levels of political authority beyond the village level, and the emerging female environmental subjectivities remain firmly based in existing political hierarchies and male-dominated structures.

The study attempted to investigate the urgency of the global warming and climate change by analyzing the available data from the secondary sources. The document analysis technique was used to examine the available literature. When it comes to the urgency of global warming and climate change, the study showed that there are two schools of thought. One is in support of the motion, claiming that global warming is a real phenomenon triggered by anthropogenic behavior, while the other is opposed to the motion, claiming that global warming and climate change are complicated phenomena, and that forecasting future climates is difficult due to the various players involved, about which climate specialists know little or nothing. Based on document analysis, study infers that there is certain uncertainty about the future of the climate, because climate always changes, and it cannot be certainly affirmed that the climate change is man- made (anthropogenic activities) or is due to natural occurrence. However, it is evident that the global surface temperature, borehole temperature, sea surface temperature, and the sea level is increasing over the years. The study suggests that for the humanity to be certain about their future, treating the global warming and climate change as an act of urgency and working towards prevention and mitigation by limiting the production of greenhouse gases and mindfully consuming the natural resources would be the plausible solution for the larger problem of Global Warming and Climate change.

Thermal energy storage phase change material cement mortar incorporated with clinical waste composites

Clinical wastes generated from hospitals and other health care institutions have increased globally, partly because of COVID-19 pandemic. Appropriate handling and disposal of this wastes is important because of their impact on human and environment. One approach is the use this wastes as composite fillers in phase change material (PCM) added into concrete and mortars used in built sector. This study investigates silicon catheter waste (SCW) and latex glove waste (LGW) as fillers mix with PCM cement mortar and evaluates the thermal performance. To determine a viable inclusion method for the cement mortar varying weight (2.5, 5.0, 7.5, and 10.0)% of PCM mixed with SCW and LGW were used as replacement of the composite aggregates. Characterization of the encapsulate PCM cement mortar and thermal analysis under elevated temperatures, compressive strength test, water absorption, porosity, and density was conducted. The microstructural analysis and thermal behavior of the modified specimens after 28 days was tested under dynamic ambient condition. From the result the quality of the cement mortar reduced from excellent to poor as the loading concentration increased from 0 to 10%. The addition of the PCM SCW and PCM LGW to the cement mortar reduced the compressive strength by 38% and 40%, respectively. The density value reduced by 3.2% and 6.8% under elevated temperature and the water absorption increased by 56% and 39%. The morphology of PCM cement mortar mixed with SCW and LGW showed less void spaces with increased homogenous formation.No thermal decomposition was observed in the PCM cement mortar with the addition of the SCW and LGW at elevated temperatures. The SCW and LGW fillers increased the thermal conductivity of the PCM mortar by 14% and 18%, and prolonged the surface temperature by 5 hours by an average of 5 C and 7 C, respectively. In addition, the SCW and LGW fillers mixed with PCM cement mortar was found to enhance the thermal performance by 65% compared with the typical cement mortar. There are huge potential on their application in building and construction industry.
