Examining factors of physical activity participation in youth with spina bifida using the Theoretical Domains Framework

Abstract: Spina Bifida (SB) is a congenital neural tube defect that involves the incomplete development of the spinal cord, resulting in varying health ailments. Given the high rate of inactivity reported for youth with SB and using the Theoretical Domains Framework as a guide, the purpose of this study was to explore the physical, psychological, social and environmental factors influencing physical activity (PA) participation in this population. Nine eligible youth (6 females; mean age = 15.9 years) took part in one, s… Show more

“…Social influences, self-efficacy, positive impacts on health and mental health, as well as enjoyment have been identified as facilitators to PA in youth with spina bifida. 52 Meanwhile, motivation and meaningfulness are primary facilitators of PA and high-intensity exercise in spinal cord injury. 53 54 Conversely, lack of knowledge, control and inaccessible environments have been identified as barriers to PA. 52 Through developing understanding of barriers and facilitators of exercise, clinicians are more likely to provide programmes that encourage adherence with consistent health benefits.…”

“…This observation warrants consideration of the role of parents of YPD. Given the unique challenges that YPD experience, parents are a vital source of support and often manage their child's schedule and act as a prompt to execute plans ( 29 ). Thus, YPD may not feel confident in their ability to self-manage goals.…”

“…However, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, uptake of exercise for those with AIS remains low with a lack of qualitative data exploring the factors influencing participation, despite the known benefits of sports, exercise, and PA and its central role in care pathways [ 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ]. In order to understand these factors there is a body of qualitative research [ 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 ]. Synthesis of this is important and can be easily structured around related frameworks, such as the biopsychosocial model [ 33 ] and the international classification of functioning disability and health, children, and youth (ICF-CY) [ 34 ].…”
