Examining caries aetiology in adolescence with structural equation modelling

Abstract: This analysis models the relationships among known causal factors for caries and suggests that the role of SES in caries may not be as important as previously thought and different behaviours that affect oral health between males and females as well as differences in caries between the sexes could begin during adolescence. These findings could help improve caries prevention programmes for adolescents.

“…However, this moment of transition in life also provokes important behavioral changes toward autonomy and independence. 30 The use of fluorides in regular toothbrushing at home and mouth rinsing in professional offices are determinants of protection against dental caries for children and adolescents 31 . Adolescents tend to stop following their parents advice and assume behavior related to social determinants of caries experience, such as the consumption of sugary beverages, 32 visiting the dentist only when experiencing pain, and disregarding regular check-ups or prevention sessions.…”

“…The aetiology of dental caries is multi‐factorial, involving complex interactions between the commensal oral microbiome and associated risk or protective factors, such as diet, behaviour, oral hygiene, genetics, host‐susceptibility characteristics and socio‐demographic factors . Demarcated hypomineralized lesions of enamel (DHL) are developmental qualitative defects of tooth enamel, clinically characterized by well‐defined areas of hypomineralization.…”

“…As children get older and transition to the adolescent stages, their oral health knowledge, attitude and practices tends to be low [13]. In addition they often opt for sugary snacks and sugar sweetened beverages which contribute to dental caries [27]. Our results further demonstrated that as age interacted with fidelity, it significantly reduced the relative risk by 48%, from (2.14) to (0.52).…”
