Examination timetabling is an inevitable problem of educational institutions. Each institution has its own particular limitations; however, the main structure is the same: assigning exams to time slots and classrooms. Several institutions solve the problem manually, but it becomes more difficult every year with increasing numbers of students and limited resources. There are many studies in the literature addressing the examination timetabling problem (ETP) and providing high quality solutions within reasonable amounts of time. Nevertheless, almost none of them can be used in practice since they are not converted into a decision support system (DSS). Commercial DSSs, on the other hand, are generally transactionally based and do not have optimization capabilities, i.e. they prevent conflicts via functional user interfaces. Use of multi-objective examination model to sensitivity analysis for sustainability with three new practices

Purpose The study has two main objectives. The first is to introduce three new examination policy practices: overbooked exam rooms, a substitute invigilator and an inheritance of the invigilation distribution. The second is the use of the examination model to determine the sustainability of the system against expected changes and to obtain long-term strategic information. This study aims to obtain managerial insights on the sustainability of the examination system with the newly introduced practices; it does not claim to propose solutions for large-scale problems. Design/methodology/approach This study introduces a multi-objective mathematical model that contains a couple of constraints that belong to new practices. To check the sustainability of the system, this study gets help from sensitivity analysis, which informs the decision-maker about how the results will react to parameter changes. The authors perform all experiments in the Python/Gurobi modeling environment. Findings The results demonstrate that the proposed practices are effective in the efficient use of resources. Also, this study shows that the examination model can be used as a stress test so that the weaknesses of the system can be identified and long-term strategic information can be obtained. Originality/value The contribution of this study is twofold: the introduction of examination policy practices that are overbooked exam rooms, a substitute invigilator and an inheritance of the invigilation distribution. Overbooked exam rooms aim to use resources effectively, taking into account the possibility of temporarily increasing the exam room capacity. The substitute invigilator protects the examination process against sudden events. The inheritance of the invigilation distribution helps to ensure fairness; and the use of the examination model to obtain managerial insights on expectations. This allows testing the validity of existing policies and making necessary changes, taking into account possible changes in the system. In this respect, it differs from the studies in the literature and fills an important managerial gap.

Üniversitelerde ve diğer eğitim kurumlarında, sınav çakışması, sağlık problemleri vb. nedenlerle planlanan sınav dönemlerinde sınava giremeyen öğrencilere mazeret/telafi sınavları yapılmaktadır. Özellikle bu sınavlara girecek öğrenci sayısının çok olduğu durumlarda, sınav çizelgesinin hazırlanması oldukça zor ve zaman alıcı olabilmektedir. Literatürde genellikle sınav çizelgeleme problemleri, oturum sayısı, sınavlar ve sınavlara katılacak öğrenciler belirli iken sınavların gözetmen, derslik gibi kaynak kısıtlarını da dikkate alarak oturumlara atanması şeklinde ele alınmaktadır. Bu çalışmada ise oturum sayısı belli değildir ve sınavların kısa bir zaman diliminde tamamlanması gerektiğinden toplam oturum sayısının mümkün olduğunca az olması istenmektedir. Ayrıca oturumların sınav sayısı açısından mümkün olduğunca dengeli olması ve bir öğrenci bir günde birden fazla sınava girecekse mümkünse sınavlarının art arda olmaması hedeflenmektedir. Ele alınan problem için bir hedef programlama modeli önerilmiştir. Geliştirilen model, bir üniversitenin Endüstri Mühendisliği Bölümünden alınan gerçek veriler kullanılarak test edilmiştir.In the universities and other educational institutions, makeup/compensation examinations are made for students who cannot take the exam at the scheduled exam periods due to examinations, health problems and so on. Especially when there are a lot of students going into these examinations, preparing the exam schedule can be very difficult and time consuming. In the literature, generally exam scheduling problems are considered as when the number of sessions, examinations and students attending to the examinations are certain, examinations are assigned to the sessions by considering resource constraints such as supervisor, classroom. In this study, number of sessions is not known and desired to be minimized because the examinations must be completed within a short period. It is also aimed that the sessions are balanced as much as possible in terms of number of examinations and if a student will attend more than one examination in one day, the examinations will not be consecutive. A goal programming model is proposed for the considered problem. The developed model has been tested using real data from the Industrial Engineering Department of a University.
