Examination of the Hierarchical Structure of the Brief COPE in a French Sample: Empirical and Theoretical Convergences

Abstract: This study aimed to determine whether the various factors of coping as measured by the Brief COPE could be integrated into a more parsimonious hierarchical structure. To identify a higher structure for the Brief COPE, several measurement models based on prior theoretical and hierarchical conceptions of coping were tested. First, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) results revealed that the Brief COPE's 14 original factors could be represented more parsimoniously with 5 higher order dimensions: problem-solving, … Show more

“…This means that the gender differences found in this and other studies are not due to an instrument bias, but rather to real differences in preferences expressed by women and men, since the scale has a similar structure in both. Those results are congruent with those presented by Doron et al (2014).…”

“…Authors previously explored the structure of the French version of the Brief COPE showing that the instrument could be represented with a 5-factor structure, but this publication did not provide extensive indicators that may prevent the use of this structure [52]. We believe that our present extensive work, including a more complete validation procedure, will provide potential users arguments supporting the relevance of the 4-factor structure.…”

“…Available in French‐, German‐ and Spanish‐ language, this 28‐item measure presents fourteen 2‐item scales. Following a higher order empirical validation, to allow a more parsimonious assessment, these scales were aggregated into five dimensions: (a) avoidance, (b) cognitive restructuring, (c) problem solving, (d) distraction and (e) support seeking. Instructions asked about the counselee's usual strategies to respond to difficult events such as the risk of cancer.…”
