Examination of Nutrient Sources and Transport in a Catchment with an Audubon Certified Golf Course

Abstract: Water bodies in the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD), California, United States, provide aesthetic value and critical ecosystem services, but are often adversely affected by the activities and infrastructure of the intensely urban environment that surrounds the parks. EBRPD leases a golf course (Tilden Golf Course (TGC)) in Tilden Regional Park, one of its most popular parks located in the Berkeley Hills, which was certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary in 2013. Nonetheless, application of nutrie… Show more

“…Nitrate loads have a similar behaviour to the streamflow in the basin (Figure 8a). This is because the most significant nitrate leaching events occur after periods of high rainfall, decreasing the mineral N in the soil, which is leached out [56,68].…”

“…Azoxystorbin is also known to be used on golf courts and has previously been detected in rain runoff. 41 (d) No specific trend A widespread occurrence was observed for the three nucleobases (cytosine, adenine, and guanine), the nicotine metabolite in urine hydroxycotinine, 42 and the surfactant/ corrosion inhibitor diethanolamine.…”

“…The headwater is characterized by well‐drained clay‐loams and loam soils, formed in material weathered from mafic igneous rocks, varying in thickness from 0.3 to 1 m (Contra Costa Soil Survey, 1981). The area is underlain by a syncline, whose axis delineates the stream's course (Graymer, 2000) and likely controls the direction of groundwater flow (Grande et al, 2019). The Moraga Formation (Basalts from the Pliocene), which underlies the alluvium over much of the catchment, is of particular importance as a potential reservoir of groundwater.…”

“…P was measured with a tipping bucket rain gauge, and data have been available for this location since February 2004. A particularity of this catchment is the presence of a periodically irrigated golf course (Grande et al, 2019(Grande et al, , 2020. Because irrigation water is only applied in a small area of the watershed, and because this water is a small fraction compared to P (less than 3% over the 2-year period studied here), we combined the depth of irrigation water with P and considered them as a single component in the water budget.…”
