Mercury (Hg), a highly toxic environmental pollutant, shows harmfulness which still represents a big concern for human health, including hazards to fertility and pregnancy outcome. Research has shown that Hg could induce impairments in the reproductive function, cellular deformation of the Leydig cells and the seminiferous tubules, and testicular degeneration as well as abnormal menstrual cycles. Some studies investigated spontaneous abortion and complicated fertility outcome due to occupational Hg exposure. Moreover, there is a relation between inhaled Hg vapour and reproductive outcome. This MiniReview evaluates the hypothesis that exposure to Hg may increase the risk of reduced fertility, spontaneous abortion and congenital deficits or abnormalities.

ÖZAmaç: Çalışmada amalgam dolgulardan konik ışın demetli bilgisayarlı tomografi (KIBT) ile görüntüleme sonrası oluşacak cıva sızıntısını test etmeyi amaçladık.Gereç ve Yöntemler: Çalışma Kırıkkale Üniversitesi Etik Kurul onayı alınarak yapıldı ve her dişin kullanımı için hastalardan yazılı onam alındı. Çeşitli nedenlerle çekilmiş 40 adet çürüksüz molar ve premolar dişe 2 yüzlü kaviteler açıldı, klinik prosedüre uygun olarak amalgam dolgular yapıldı. Dişler rastgele kontrol ve deney grubu olmak üzere iki gruba ayrıldı. Amalgamın sertleşme süreci tamamlandıktan bir hafta sonra dişler 20ml yapay tükürük (Fusayama solüsyonu) içeren tüpler içerisine kondu. Kontrol grubu 24 saat bekletilirken; deney grubundaki dişler tüpler içerisinde KIBT ile belirli parametrelerde görüntülendi. Görüntülemeyi takip eden 24 saat sonrasında dişler tüplerden çıkarılıp cıva konsantrasyonu için İndüktif Olarak Eşleştirilmiş Plazma -Optik Eisyon Spektrometresi (ICP-OES) ile analize gönderildi.Bulgular: KIBT ile ekspoze edilen amalgam dolgulu dişlerden 24 saat içerisinde yapay tükürüğe salınan cıva miktarı ortalama 0,268±0,197 ppm iken, kontrol grubunda bu değer 0,141±0,152 ppm olarak saptandı.Sonuç: Bu bulgular ışığında, deneysel koşullarda, amalgam dolgulu dişlerde KIBT ile gerçekleştirilen görüntüleme cıva salınımını artırmaktadır diyebiliriz.Anahtar Sözcükler: Amalgam, Cıva, Konik ışın demetli bilgisayarlı tomografi ABSTRACT Objective: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the mercury leakage of from dental amalgam fillings after cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan. Material and Methods:This study was approved by the Kırıkkale University Clinical Research Ethics Committee. Written informed consent was obtained from the patients for the use of the extracted teeth in this project. Forty caries-free molar or premolar teeth that had been extracted for clinical indications were used. Two-sided cavities were prepared and amalgam fillings applied to each tooth. One week after amalgam setting process, two groups of 20 randomly selected teeth were placed in 20 mL of artificial saliva. In the experiment group, tubes were immediately exposed with CBCT. The control group was kept under normal conditions. Twenty-four hours later the teeth were removed from the artificial saliva, and the saliva was analyzed for mercury content by using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry. Results:The amount of mercury released to the artificial saliva was found to be 0.268±0.197 ppm in CBCT group within 24 hours, whereas this value was 0.141±0.152 ppm in the control group. Conclusion:The findings of this study indicated that CBCT imaging of teeth restored with amalgam leads an increase in mercury leakage under experimental conditions.

Aim: The aim of this study was to compare the level of mercury in the saliva of children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as compared to age-and gender-matched controls in specific age groups. Materials and methods: A case-control observational study design was used. In school children with ADHD and outpatient dental clinics of a university dental hospital, the participants were schoolchildren diagnosed with ADHD studying in the first grade (6-7 years), sixth grade (12-13 years), and ninth grade (15-16 years) and were gender-matched to children without ADHD attending regular classes in school. Ninety children with ADHD comprised the test group while 90 children without ADHD comprised the control group. Results: In this study, we found that children with ADHD had higher levels of salivary mercury than their age-and gender-matched counterparts; however, this difference was significant only in the 6-7 years of age group. The regression model showed a mild positive association between salivary mercury and ADHD; however, the association was not statistically significant. Conclusion: While there is some indication that salivary mercury may be higher in children with ADHD, there is insufficient evidence to establish a definite association between the two. Clinical significance: The study highlights the need to evaluate existing evidence on the role of mercury, especially salivary mercury, in ADHD.
