The recent advances in laboratory technologies have resulted in a wealth of chemical and biological data. The rapid proliferation of a vast amount of data has led to a set of cheminformatics and bioinformatics applications that manipulate dynamic, heterogeneous, and massive data. An example of such application in the pharmaceutical industry is the computational process involved in the early discovery of lead drug candidates for a given target disease. In this paper, an efficient implementation of a drug candidate database is presented and evaluated. This study shows that high performance data access can be achieved through proper choices of data representation, database schema design, and parallel processing techniques.

This work explores (semi-)automated EC on the WWW. The EContracts framework enables EC WWW sites and EC automated tools to present standardized information. This information (1) allows each party to decide whether it wishes to engage in an EC activity with the other party, (2) enables automated negotiation between the parties, and (3) enables the establishment of an electronic contract, i.e. a formal description of an agreed upon EC transaction. The EContracts framework defines the basic software components of an EC party and their interconnections. Based on the EContracts framework, various applications can be built. Examples are deal making applications, deal feasibility checkers, brokers etc. Furthermore, the definitions of the data structures and the algorithms enable a theoretical investigation of automated commerce. 93 Int. Component-based e-commerce technology is a recent trend towards resolving the e-commerce challenge at both system and application levels. Instead of delivering a system as a prepackaged monolith system containing any conceivable feature, component-based systems consist of a lightweight kernel to which new features can be added in the form of components. In order to identify the central problems in component-based e-commerce and ways to deal with them, we investigate prototypes, technologies, and frameworks that will transcend the current state of the practice in Internet commerce. In this paper, we first discuss the current practices and trends in component-based electronic commerce based on the International Workshop on Componentbased Electronic Commerce. Then, we investigate a number of research issues and future directions in component-based development for electronic commerce.
