Evolutionary perspective of drug eluting stents: from thick polymer to polymer free approach

Abstract: Background Introduction of Bare Metal Stents (BMS) was itself a revolutionary step in the history of the medical industry; however, Drug Eluting Stents (DES) maintained its superiority over BMS in every aspect from restenosis rate to late lumen loss. The reason behind the magnanimous position of the DES in the stent market is the degree of improvement with which it evolves. New and better stents come into the market every year, surpassing their predecessors by many folds. … Show more

“…In our study, reduced LVEF, cardiogenic shock, CPR on admission, peak troponin-I, NT-ProBNP, and lipid-lowering agents were common independent predictors of MACE in both the DM and non-DM groups ( Supplementary Table S5 ). These are well-known independent predictors of MACE in patients with AMI [ 33 , 43 , 44 ].…”

“…We assume that the bio-sensor implantation procedure is based on a well-known stent technique [30], however, the stent is used here not for artery stenosis, but for creating a stable structure to mount a bio-sensor. Each stent is a tiny plastic tube (if needed, can be bioresorbable) inserted into the lumen of a blood vessel, with around 5 mm length and strut thickness of 50 µm [31].…”

“…Sirolimus is a suitable option for stent coating because of its antibacterial, antiproliferative, and immunosuppressive properties [11]. A plant-based antiproliferative and antineoplastic drug called paclitaxel is used to treat cancer [12]. First-generation stents outperformed BMS, but they were plagued by inflammatory reactions and slow artery healing, prompting the development of secondgeneration stents.…”

“…The zotarolimus and everolimus stents are based on sirolimus stents. These medications function similarly to sirolimus [12]. As the first second-generation DES, the FDA approved Medtronic's Endeavour in 2004.…”
