Evolutionary numerical model for cultural heritage structures via genetic algorithms: a case study in central Italy

Abstract: In this paper the actual dynamic behavior of the civic Clock tower of Rotella, a little village in central Italy heavily damaged by the recent 2016 seismic sequence, is thoroughly investigated by means of a detailed numerical model built and calibrated using the experimental modal properties obtained through Ambient Vibration Tests. The goal is to update the uncertain parameters of two behavioral material models applied to the Finite Element Model (elastic moduli, mass densities, constraints, and boundary cond… Show more

“…In general, model representativeness is commonly achieved through accurate calibrations based on experimental measurements. A typical example is defining an objective function weighting spectral differences, which is minimized with iterative numerical techniques 21–24 . A reasonable alternative is to search for a synthetic but representative mechanical description, that is, a lighter (low‐order) model that can still capture the essential dynamical traits of the structural system but trades simulation accuracy for computational efficiency.…”

“…Cracks can also emerge, indicating foundation movement, soil shifting, or excessive loads. Additionally, the deterioration of load-bearing elements, such as concrete degradation or corrosion of steel reinforcement, can compromise the foundation's strength and stability [3]. The accurate identification and assessment of structural damage in building foundations are paramount to ensure timely intervention and mitigate potential risks.…”

“…In 2016, a series of catastrophic seismic shocks caused victims and considerable damage to the heritage structures in the Central Italy regions [1][2][3][4]. These earthquakes heavily stroked the Norcia, Visso, Arquata del Tronto, Amatrice and Accumoli villages [5,6].…”
