Evolutionary life history theory as an organising framework for cohort studies: insights from the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey

Abstract: By tracking a group of individuals through time, cohort studies provide fundamental insights into the developmental time course and causes of health and disease. Evolutionary life history theory seeks to explain patterns of growth, development, reproduction and senescence, and inspires a range of hypotheses that are testable using the longitudinal data from cohort studies. Here we review two decades of life history theory-motivated work conducted in collaboration with the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition… Show more

“…This approach is particularly promising for the domain of reproduction. A large body of work has documented the association between harshness and a short-term reproductive decision-making strategy (lower level of sexual commitment, lower level of parental investment) (Belsky et al, 2012;Kusawa et al, 2020). In harsher environment, individuals may thus feel more threatened by the sexual promiscuity of others and more willing to moralize them.…”

“…Data come from the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey, a longitudinal birth cohort study that started in 1983 in Metro Cebu, Philippines (Adair et al, 2011; Kuzawa et al, 2020). The mothers in this study, who represent the children in the original cohort, were contacted by phone to gauge their interest in participating in this phase of the study.…”

“…To clarify the immunological processes associated with reproduction, we used the Illumina BeadChip 450k Array to examine genome-wide blood leukocyte DNA methylation (DNAm) in 394 women who were similar in age (20–21 years), but varied in reproductive status (nulliparous, pregnant, breastfeeding and parous) at the time of measurement. The women in this study are participants in the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey, a long-term study of health and life histories in the Metropolitan Cebu Area, Philippines [ 38 , 39 ]. DNAm is a biochemical process that reflects chromatin accessibility and transcriptional activity, providing a tool for studying gene–environment interactions that often underlie development, aging and disease [ 40 ].…”
