Evolutionary dynamics of human autoimmune disease genes and malfunctioned immunological genes

Abstract: BackgroundOne of the main issues of molecular evolution is to divulge the principles in dictating the evolutionary rate differences among various gene classes. Immunological genes have received considerable attention in evolutionary biology as candidates for local adaptation and for studying functionally important polymorphisms. The normal structure and function of immunological genes will be distorted when they experience mutations leading to immunological dysfunctions.ResultsHere, we examined the fundamental… Show more

“…This is highly consistent with the immune role of LCLs we study here. This finding is also consistent with previous work showing that natural selection may have favored different alleles in certain immune genes across human populations and that differences in autoimmune disease risks may be a side consequence of differences in these evolutionary histories [39] , [40] . The increased expression of immune genes in LCLs also improves our power to detect differences with respect to most other gene functions.…”

“…Microarray gene expression data sets contain a large number of features. Thus, several dimension reduction methods are useful, such as principal component analysis [100] and maximum relevance minimum redundancy [81]. Other methods are network-based approaches (Table 4) that integrate different types of data for analysis.…”
