Evolutionary Design of Engineering Constructions

Abstract: The basic information required to utilize one of possible computation tools/algorithms (mainly the evolution strategy) to solve a wide class of real practical engineering optimization problems is presented and discussed in the present paper. The effectiveness of the considered method is demonstrated by the possibility of the use of different form of objective functions, various and numerous nonlinear constraints and different types of design variables (continuous, discrete, real, integer). The sensitivity of t… Show more

“…For specimens subjected to tension with fibres directed at 45 • , the analysis of the stress-strain diagrams demonstrates always non-linearity, but this behaviour is not identical-compare Figure 1a The approximations of the stress-strain diagram seem to be important in view of theoretical and numerical modelling, especially in the area of continuum damage mechanics. Two general approaches can be introduced: 1 the use of spline curves with a finite number of key-points-see Muc [16]. 2 the definition of the σ-ε relation and fitting the parameters of this function using e.g., genetic algorithms-Muc [17].…”

“…To continually improve the mechanism, by modifying its structure and parameters, we employed sGA. Genetic Algorithms in various implementations have been successfully applied in a variety of problems [40,41,42,43,44,45,46]. In order to explain the working principle of sGA, it is first necessary to introduce Real-Coded Genetic Algorithm (RC-GA)—a global optimization procedure, which works on real-valued decision variable vectors.…”
