In the last decades, significant researches were dedicated to model the water-quality trends, soil erosion and material losses, contaminant transport, and their ecological impacts. The present paper investigates theoretically and presents a numerical model with finite elements of the pollutant transport and diffusion in 2-D environmental flow. It is a general model based on the physical groundwater flow equations presented into a new approach, in quantity structure. The mathematical model is based on mass conservation, including the main flow of the fluid and existing pollutants. The fluid mass conservation includes the changes in the groundwater volume flow in a selected time interval and the appeared modifications in the aquifer characteristics due to the pollutant presence are used in the numerical model. Some supplementary considerations concerning mathematical modeling are briefly presented. This model can be used to simulate the groundwater behavior in different situations, with a concentrated source of the pollutant, or with 2 sources of pollution. In the present paper are simulated only the aquifers with mainly horizontal groundwater flow and with a relatively known aquifer’s structure. The model is tested for a landfill near the Dambovita River, to predict the groundwater contamination and the time variation of concentration. Finally, some conclusions and references are presented.

Nowadays many aquatic ecosystems have become more eutrophic, as anthropic pollution causes the acceleration of eutrophication, which is a slow natural process. Therefore, the cultural eutrophication occurs more rapidly and causes problems in the affected water bodies. Since most of the reservoirs have complex use (fl ood attenuation, generation of hydroelectricity, household and industrial water supply, and irrigation), several models have been already developed to simulate the behavior of eutrophic ecosystems. The objective of this study was to determine the benefi ts of sustainable exploitation of an eutrophic lake. Therefore, the study aims, fi rst, to analyze the trophic level in the lake, and second, to identify the best scenario of reservoir exploitation, in order to avoid the occurrence of eutrophic phenomenon or to minimize this effects. Also, based on the experimental data and an ecological model, the lake stratifi cation and thermocline variation, correlated with operating conditions, have been studied. The study case is represented by a shallow reservoir in Romania, Golesti, which has 55 million m³ volume and a maximum depth of 32 m. Golesti reservoir allows fl ood control, hydropower generation, water supply (household and industrial), and irrigation. Values of infl ow and outfl ow from January 2008 to October 2009 were available for the studied reservoir.

Municipal solid waste landfi lls are potential long-term sources of pollution for both humans and the environment and need to be managed properly both during their lifetime and after closure. This paper analyzes the infl uence of the Râureni-Râmnicu Vâlcea landfi ll (Romania) on the concentration of pollutant reaching the groundwater and the nearby Olt River. Prediction of contaminant concentration in groundwater is based on a simple mathematical model of solute transport. Model parameters are determined from fi eld data and scale analysis. Despite its recent closure after 32 years of activity, this landfi ll has the potential to continue to pollute both the Olt River and the groundwater for decades. Sensitivity analyses are performed to determine the impact of varying the dispersivity coeffi cients on the resulting contaminant transport and distribution in the aquifer. Aquifer pollution is predicted for twenty years beyond the landfi ll closure. Enhanced landfi ll monitoring and establishment of a shared data portal for Romanian environmental data is highly recommended.
