“…Sanabria Marsh, Northwestern Iberia, 8,721 BP [ 67 69 ]) or France (e.g. Lignin Lake, Southern Alps, 7,545 BP [ 70 ]; Armorican massif, Western Atlantic region, ~8000 BP [ 71 ]) seem plausible. They might have contributed to the bidirectional colonization of Europe by walnut from western and eastern Mediterranean reservoirs with natural- or human-mediated bottlenecks.…”

“…Subsequent palynological finds demonstrated that J . regia may have survived the cold, dry glacial intervals in refugia located in southern Europe [ 12 14 ] and the Balkans [ 15 18 ] ( S1 Video ). Carpological fossils of walnut have been found in northeastern Italy (Sammardenchia, 7,550 BP) [ 19 ], Switzerland (near Lake Constance, ~ 6,000–4,350 BP) [ 20 ] and Slovenia (Hocevarica, 5,600–5,500 BP) [ 21 ].…”

“…Furthermore, data related to the beginning of agricultural activities are discrete and still debated. Several studies based on pollen reconstructions from the Armorican Domain have reported the presence of Cerealia pollen grains in association with ruderal taxa such as Plantago lanceolata since the late Mesolithic (8700 cal BP) (Visset et al, 1996;Joly and Visset, 2009). These works suggested an early regional Neolithization.…”

“…Despite its limitations, therefore, the palynological method has the advantage that it may be used to define the full ecological context of early farming, and can stimulate debate on what can be a controversial subject (Behre 2007;Tinner et al 2007). Thus unusually early cereal-type pollen identified in Maritime Europe, at Vertonne in the Armorica region of France (Joly and Visset 2009), although perhaps belonging to halophytic grasses of the taxa discussed by Hall et al (1993), might also relate to early farming traces given associated disturbance taxa. It is noted that Joly et al (2007) produced a major work on comparative morphology of wild versus cultivated types based on glycerol pollen preparations, and has identified major vegetation disturbance in these same Cerealia-type spectra from Vertonne and other Armorica sites.…”
