Evolution of the truncated disc and inner hot-flow of GX 339–4

Abstract: Aims. We study the changes in geometry of the truncated disc and the inner hot-flow of GX 339-4 by analyzing the Power Spectral Density (PSD) extracted from six XMM-Newton observations taken at the very end of an outburst. Methods. A theoretical model of the PSD of GX 339-4 in the 0.3-0.7 keV (thermal reverberation dominated) and 0.7-1.5 keV (disc continuum dominated) energy bands is developed. The model assumes the standard accretion disc to be truncated at a specific radius, inside of which are two distinct … Show more

“…For typical X-ray transients (e.g., GX 339-4), the disk is believed to be truncated at large radii at the beginning of the outburst, and the inner edge moves to smaller radii as the mass accretion rate increases (see Esin et al 1997). There is evidence from observations that supports this scenario (e.g., Wang-Ji et al 2018;Chainakun et al 2021). However, GRS 1915+105 is a source with particular properties (see Belloni et al 2000).…”

“…It is therefore necessary to either tie some parameters in the reverberation model to those constrained from the time-averaged spectrum (e.g. Cackett et al 2014;Wilkins et al 2016;Epitropakis et al 2016;Mahmoud, Done, & De Marco 2019;Chainakun et al 2019Chainakun et al , 2021, or perform simultaneous fits across different data sets (e.g. Chainakun & Young 2015;Chainakun et al 2016;Mastroserio, Ingram, & van der Klis 2020).…”

“…In fact, this assumption is fairy The red dot indicates the position that photons are emitted. While a portion of the hard photons move to the observer directly, some photons are lagged as they could scatter with the wind surface multiple times before escape the wind (blue solid line); the travelling direction of the lagged photons could defined by the parameters explained in Section 3.2. good approximation and usually employed when the size scale of direct emission is relatively small and the scatter or reflection takes place far from the central black hole (e.g., Mahmoud et al 2019;Chainakun et al 2021b).…”

“…In fact, this technique has been applied to study compact object across mass regime: from X-ray binaries to AGN (e.g. Middleton et al 2007;Uttley et al 2011;Alston et al 2020;Chainakun et al 2021b). For ULXs, the number of timing studies have increased progressively, especially since the first detection of the NS-ULX, and have revealed much information about the nature and properties of ULXs, in addition to that is obtained from the spectral studies (see Kaaret et al 2017 and references therein).…”
