Evolution of the Production Semisubmersible

Abstract: Semisubmersibles and FPSOs are the two most common floating production solutions and they compete in many field developments. The first production semisubmersible in 1975 preceded the prototype FPSO by two years. Both concepts were more or less on a par for the next two decades, until the dramatic surge in popularity of the FPSO in the late 1990s. However, the continued adoption of semisubmersibles indicates that they retain advantages over FPSOs in certain situations. Semisubmersibles have s… Show more

“…Hence the contractor must get adequate information about the platform's details-dimensions, weights, prices of materials, and cost of labour. The knowledge of experienced Project Engineers and Project Managers is very crucial, which helps to achieve different developed facilities, ranging from semisubmersibles [218][219][220][221][222][223][224][225][226][227][228] to FPSOs [229][230][231][232][233][234] and offshore wind turbines [235][236][237][238][239][240].…”

“…Semi-submersibles evolved from a drilling vessel type called a ''submersible,'' which operated sitting on bottom in fairly shallow water and provided a working deck well above the highest expected waves (see Lim and Ronalds, 2000). These units transited afloat on pontoons and required ''stability columns'' to safely submerge to a bottom founded mode of operation.…”

“…This leaves six proven deepwater platform types -FPSOs, semisubmersibles, spars, compliant towers, TLPs and mini-TLPs [2][3][4]. This cut-off enables all compliant towers to be included, along with some important North Sea platforms.…”
