End-users are accustomed to filtering and browsing styled collections of data on professional web sites, but they have few ways to create and publish such information architectures for themselves. This paper presents a full-lifecycle analysis of the Exhibit framework-an end-user tool which provides such functionality-to understand the needs, capabilities, and practices of this class of users. We include interviews, as well as analysis of over 1,800 visualizations and 200,000 web interactions with these visualizations. Our analysis reveals important findings about this user population which generalize to the task of providing better end-user structured content publication tools.

Abstract:Mashups allow users to develop applications from a variety of open APIs. The creation of mashups is supported by a complex ecosystem of interconnected data providers, mashup platforms, and users. A sign of a healthy ecosystem is that the number and diversity of APIs and mashups in the ecosystem increases continuously. In this paper, we describe a model of the evolution of the mashup ecosystem that allows us to estimate the diversification of the mashup ecosystem over time. In this model we show the evolutionary relationships between mashups as branches in a phylogenetic tree. We discuss how the diversification rate of the mashup ecosystem can be estimated by fitting this tree to a birth-death process model. The results of our research show that the diversity of the mashup ecosystem is increasing with time, however, not monotonically.

A Topic Modeling Approach to Categorizing API Customer Value Propositions

Companies increasingly use Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to create new value propositions in the digital world. However, there is little knowledge about the type of value propositions that public APIs enable companies to provide. Thus, this study analyzes data from 13,829 API descriptions published in programmableweb.com to: (i) identify and categorize current and emerging API customer value propositions, (ii) analyze the evolution of API customer value propositions, and (iii) showcase Topic Modeling as a feasible technique to study API customer value propositions. This research contributes towards API service systems research by: (i) identifying six categories of API customer value propositions, and (ii) revealing a long tail distribution of API customer value propositions that is flattening.iii
