Evolution of the H9N2 influenza genotype that facilitated the genesis of the novel H7N9 virus

Abstract: The emergence of human infection with a novel H7N9 influenza virus in China raises a pandemic concern. Chicken H9N2 viruses provided all six of the novel reassortant’s internal genes. However, it is not fully understood how the prevalence and evolution of these H9N2 chicken viruses facilitated the genesis of the novel H7N9 viruses. Here we show that over more than 10 y of cocirculation of multiple H9N2 genotypes, a genotype (G57) emerged that had changed antigenicity and improved adaptability in chickens. It b… Show more

“…Our surveillance in LBMs in China during 2009 to 2012 shows that the H9N2 virus was prevalent in chickens; this result is consistent with the finding in a former report that was conducted in farm chickens in China (47). All these results indicate that the H9N2 virus is becoming a predominant virus circulating in domestic poultry in China.…”

“…All these results indicate that the H9N2 virus is becoming a predominant virus circulating in domestic poultry in China. Noticeably, the recently identified H9N2 viruses are distinct from the vaccine strains used, indicating that the virus changes very fast, especially the HA gene due to the immunity and selection pressure (47). Rapid antigenic drift and aerosol transmission among birds have been major issues in the attempts to control the H9N2 avian influenza and could accelerate the spread and evolution of H9N2 AIVs (48).…”

“…In the meantime, H9N2 viruses continued to cause human infections in China and other countries based on etiological and serological evidence (5)(6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12). We recently found that avian H9N2 viruses have undergone significant genetic evolution, especially in their internal genes, to form a predominant genotype (G57), which in turn provided the internal genes to multiple new subtypes, including H7N9 and H10N8 viruses (13). Thus, the evolving internal genes of H9N2 viruses may be a primary genetic source for emergent H9N2 viruses and their reassortants that can confer human infection.…”

“…This implies that we might be able to predict epidemics caused by H7N9 virus by monitoring the prevalence and variation of H9 virus cOR, Crude odds ratio; aOR, adjusted odds ratio; CI, confidence interval. [5]. Moreover, the risk of H7N9 virus prevalence could also be decreased by reducing the amount of H9 virus in the environment.…”
