Evolution of the Ablation Region After Magnetic Resonance–Guided High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Ablation in a Vx2 Tumor Model

Abstract: During the first 3 days after MR-HIFU ablation, the ablation region increases in size, after which it gradually decreases in size. The NPA on CE-T1-w imaging underestimates the extent of tissue necrosis on histology in the initial few days, but after 1 week, the NPA is reliable in delineating the necrotic tissue area. The 240-EM thermal dose limit underestimates the necrotic tissue area immediately after MR-HIFU ablation. Reliable treatment evaluation techniques are particularly important for noninvasive, imag… Show more

“…Tissue response might become more apparent some hours after treatment [29]. Next to T2W MR imaging, other MR imaging techniques such as (dynamic) contrast-enhanced MR imaging, diffusion weighted, or T2* weighted MR imaging could be used for treatment evaluation and follow-up [21,[30][31][32][33]. It has previously been shown that the permeability of vessels increases, or the vessels are destroyed by mechanical destruction for example due to cavitation effects [8].…”

“…In this study, AG-013736 was administered in rabbits with VX2 liver tumours, which are most commonly used large animal model in imitating primary or secondary liver cancers in humans [13,31,32]. A number of studies about the effect of AG-013736 on breast cancer, prostate cancer, neuroblastoma and cholangiocarcinoma have been tested previously in rat and mouse models [7,25,33].…”

“…Renal ablation using MR-guided HIFU rather than power (Watts, Philips Systems) used in previous studies [25,26] . Recent experimental studies showed the effectiveness of both power (Watts) and energy (Joules) units in ablating tissues [20,21,[25][26][27] .…”

Recent experimental studies showed the effectiveness of both power (Watts) and energy (Joules) units in ablating tissues [20,21,[25][26][27] . The relationship between energy dose and lesion depth must be considered [20,21] , especially in deep-seated tumors, because this relation depends on the type/density/size of targets and microenvironment factors, such as vascularity/ perfusion.…”
