Evolution of SARS-CoV-2 Key Mutations in Vienna Detected by Large Scale Screening Program

Abstract: Currently countries across the globe are preparing for the fourth wave of SARS-CoV-2 infections, which is mainly driven by the rapid spread of novel SARS-CoV-2 variants. Austria and, in particular, the capital city of Vienna, witnessed a disproportionally steep rise in SARS-CoV-2 infection rates during the last wave of infections. By the end of January 2021, the government of Vienna launched an innovative, state-wide SARS-CoV-2 screening program based on PCR analysis of self-collected mouthwash samples. More t… Show more

“…Fourth, we did not determine the SARS-CoV-2 variants in the respiratory specimens tested in the ID laboratory. However, we have deduced from nationwide surveillance programs that the WT strain was the predominant variant until February 2021 [ 59 , 60 ]. In March 2021, the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7) became the most prevalent circulating virus until June 2021.…”

“…The global pandemic of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has last lasted two and a half years and the SARS-CoV-2 continued to spread over the world [22] , [48] , [57] . To date, no drugs specifically for COVID-19 have been approved, therefore, effective disinfection and protective methods to prevent the transmission and infection of SARS-CoV-2 are still the main strategies [16] .…”
