Evolution of Positioning Techniques in Cellular Networks, from 2G to 4G

Abstract: This review paper presents within a common framework the mobile station positioning methods applied in 2G, 3G, and 4G cellular networks, as well as the structure of the related 3GPP technical specifications. The evolution path through the generations is explored in three steps at each level: first, the new network elements supporting localization features are introduced; then, the standard localization methods are described; finally, the protocols providing specific support to mobile station positioning are st… Show more

“…Technological advancements have been continuously generating improved and faster ways to access the internet. For instance, the evolution of the mobile data network between 2G, 3G and 4G has shown a dramatic increase of the possibility of mobile internet access over the past 25 years (Saraiva Campos, 2017). This has opened up new doors to both public and private services based on ICT.…”

“…Contents can be identified by naming contents at the network layer [8]. With positioning techniques in cellular networks [54], the locations of users can also be easily obtained. Based on these techniques, when a content request arrives, it will be routed to corresponding BS with limited signaling overhead.…”

“…In this paper, we use various critical parameters [e.g., one-hop forwarding time, payload bitrate depending on message size, modulation, forward error correction (FEC), ACK, payload bitrate, and maximum transmission unit (MTU)] to measure simple router/bridge radio network performance. We focus on real operational wireless networks with two fixed nodes, or the other performances are measured in terms of bit error rate versus signal-to-noise ratio [15] for remote control applications of the industry such as SCADA and telemetry, electricity, weather, smart grid, outlets, and ATMs.…”
