Evolution of penile prosthetic devices

Abstract: Penile implant usage dates to the 16th century yet penile implants to treat erectile dysfunction did not occur until nearly four centuries later. The modern era of penile implants has progressed rapidly over the past 50 years as physicians' knowledge of effective materials for penile prostheses and surgical techniques has improved. Herein, we describe the history of penile prosthetics and the constant quest to improve the technology. Elements of the design from the first inflatable penile prosthesis by Scott a… Show more

“…[41] Malleable prostheses tend to function more effectively as in some cases, due to fibrosis of tissues, inflatable prostheses are not able to overcome corporeal rigidity. [42] However, satisfaction rates have been found to be higher in inflatable prostheses than in malleable ones, most likely because inflatable prostheses give the patient the option of choosing when the penis is erect and are more aesthetically pleasing.…”

“…The implant of penile prosthetics has become a common procedure over the last decades, with an annual implant rate of 25.000 in North America alone. 1 Improvements in prosthesis technology and surgery reduced the complication rate to less than 2% within 5 years. Erosion, infection and device malfunction however, are potential, severe complications which may require removal of the device.…”

“…Small modifications have been made including hydrophilic coating and more blunted tips, but the design remains very similar to that implant created by Drs. Small and Carrion in the 1970s [20].…”
