Evolution of mosaic hybrid zone between invasive and endemic species of Cyprinidae through space and time

Abstract: Hybridization phenomena can be considered in different ways. Hybridization studies can be used to elucidate some aspects of speciation and adaptation. However, hybridization may be a threat to endemic species. Here, we studied bidirectional introgression between two sympatric species of Cyprinidae: Chondrostoma toxostoma toxostoma and C. nasus nasus . Analysis of morphology, allozymes and mtDNA sequences revealed that the hybridization between these two cyprinids takes different forms in the same river. The mo… Show more

“…A 610 bp fragment of the cytochrome b mtDNA sequence was amplified using primers and an amplification protocol described elsewhere [10]. The single strand was used as a template for the sequencing of 532 bp with an automated DNA sequencer (Macrogen Inc.) (Genbank accession number EF363338-EF363452).…”

“…Hybridization is well known from cases where fish species have been introduced to habitats containing native congeners, with prominent examples from salmonids (Allendorf et al 2004), cyprinids (Costedoat et al 2005) and cyprinodontids (Rosenfield et al 2004). However, there is also concern that human-mediated disturbance of aquatic habitats can lead to hybridization among naturally occurring species pairs.…”
