Evolution of Groundwater in Yinchuan Oasis at the Upper Reaches of the Yellow River after Water-Saving Transformation and Its Driving Factors

Abstract: In recent years, the amount of water diverted from the Yellow River has been decreasing year by year, which is the biggest problem for the development and utilization of water resources in Yinchuan Oasis (YCO). Through the implementation of the Agricultural Water-saving Transformation Project (AWSTP), water resource shortage in the YCO has been alleviated greatly, and ecological degradation problems, such as soil salinization, have also been effectively addressed. However, how the shallow groundwater in YCO ha… Show more

“…The overestimations of streamflow at the second drainage basin were due to human activities. Because of the urban expansion and the application of water‐saving technologies in this drainage basin (Mi et al., 2020), both irrigation area and irrigated water were reduced. This led to a decreasing trend of daily irrigation flows in two irrigation canals (i.e., C 2 and C 3 ) based on the two‐sided Mann‐Kendall test (Kendall, 1948; Mann, 1945) (with p = 0.01 for C 2 , and p ≤ 0.01 for C 3 ).…”

“…The Ningxia (35 • 14 -39 • 23 N, 104 • 17 -107 • 39 E) is adjacent to the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in the West and North, Shaanxi Province in the East, and Gansu Province in the south, with a total area of 6.64 × 10 4 km 2 [30,31] and has 5 prefecturelevel cities of Yinchuan (the capital), Shizuishan, Wuzhong, Zhongwei, and Guyuan [32]. It is located in the middle and upper reaches of the Yellow River, which flows from southwest to northeast through Northern Ningxia and formed an alluvial plain, where many channels for irrigating farmlands were built along a about 400 km stretch of the Yellow River [33].…”

“…The monthly mean temperatures range from − 7 to 24 • C. The Yellow River is an important perennial river that flows through the Yinchuan Basin from southwest to northeast. It is the most important source of irrigation water; irrigation return flow serves as a major source of groundwater recharge (Mi et al, 2020).…”
