Evolution of Echocardiographic Dimensions with Age and Training in Young Endurance Horses

Abstract: This publication is a compilation of all Research Abstracts presented at the Ninth International Conference on Equine Exercise Physiology. Unlike previous ICEEP conferences there will not be a conference proceedings of full length manuscripts. These abstracts succinctly summarise a wide array of investigations relevant to the equine athlete, and will be useful to veterinarians and others involved in management of horses used for sport, work and competition. “…For instance, Seeherman and Morris ( 1991 ) showed that the maximum HR (HR max ) did not change with age in yearling vs. adult Thoroughbred horses, whereas aerobic power and exercise capacity increased with age and training. When considering cardiac autonomic control and given that left ventricular volume and stroke volume are greater in 6-year-old endurance horses than in 4-year-olds (Trachsel et al, 2014 ) for the same cardiac output, HR should be lower in 6-year-olds than in 4-year-olds. These changes probably mean that HRV differs in 4- vs. 6-year-olds.…”
