The present study aims to analyze the prevalence of depressive symptoms and its sociodemographic-associated factors in Peruvian adults. Data was extracted from a nation-wide representative survey in which depression symptoms were measured with the PHQ-9 and sociodemographic information was extracted from household data. Depression severity rates were estimated for each symptom, and responses were modeled through the Rating Scale Model to obtain a depression measure used as dependent variable on a Generalized Mixed Linear Model. The most frequent depression symptoms were emotional, such as discouragement, sad mood, hopelessness, and lack of pleasure when doing activities. Our model showed that, after controlling the effects of all the variables considered, the most relevant predictors were gender, education level, physiographic region, age, marital status, and number of coresidents. Higher depression levels were found in women, people who did not complete higher education, participants living in the Highlands, older adults, single participants, and people living alone. Thus, interventions to promote or prevent depression severity during similar situations as the pandemic should focus on specific sociodemographic groups and their particular needs.

Purpose It is estimated that someone dies by suicide every 40 s globally and that 3000 people end their lives daily. Of these deaths, 79% occur in low-resource settings. The very nature of the low-resource settings often serves as a barrier to the adoption and implementation of evidence-based suicide prevention models that have demonstrated success in high-resource countries. As such rates of suicide continue to increase, the workforce of trained mental health providers equipped to effectively engage, assess, and treat individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts and behaviors remains relatively stagnant. This paper aims to illustrate the implementation of the Engaged Community Action for Preventing Suicide (ECAPS) model as a means of developing a culturally relevant and responsive model of suicide prevention that is acceptable and sustainable in low-resource settings. Methods University faculty and staff (n=34) and psychology students (n=25), and community-based mental health providers (n=41) providing mental health services to at-risk individuals in highly vulnerable communities in Lima, Peru participated in the implementation of ECAPS process. Results The resulting program, ¡PEDIR!, demonstrates the acceptability, feasibility, and effectiveness of the ECAPS model. Conclusion The ECAPS model is a feasible and effective framework for use in low-resource settings to guide the development of a culturally relevant community-level intervention to address the systemic, societal, and individual level factors that serve as barriers to suicide prevention.

Background/ObjectiveRheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients might experience anxiety and depressive symptoms. Deficient vitamin D levels may be a trigger for these conditions. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of depression, anxiety symptoms, and suicidal risk or ideation in patients with RA associated with vitamin D serum levels.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, we recruited RA patients older than 18 years, classified into 3 groups according to serum vitamin D levels: sufficient, ≥30 ng/mL; insufficient, 20–29 ng/mL; and deficient, <20 ng/mL. Based on the self-reported Plutchik and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, we evaluated the association of suicidal risk, depression, and anxiety with the vitamin D levels in RA and the Rheumatoid Arthritis Quality-of-Life Questionnaire.ResultsWe studied 72 patients with RA between January and October 2019. We found an inverse correlation between Plutchik score and suicidal risk with inadequate vitamin D levels, but not with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Suicidal ideation was associated with a higher score on the Rheumatoid Arthritis Quality-of-Life Questionnaire.ConclusionsDespite the high prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms in RA patients, a Plutchik low correlation coefficient with inadequate serum levels of vitamin D was found. However, in the analysis of covariance, we were able to find that vitamin D levels remain associated with a reduction of suicide ideation. Further studies are needed to identify a risk profile for early psychological interventions to improve the quality of life in RA patients.
