Micro-Raman spectroscopy on carbonaceous material has been applied to estimate the maximum paleotemperatures achieved by the Tectono-metamorphic units that constitute most of the backbone of the Internal domain of the Rif orogen in North Morocco. The Internal Rif is composed by the continental deep units of the Sebtides, exhumed at the end of the Alpine cycle, overlained by the Variscan Ghomarides. Both units are trust above the meta-carbonates of the Dorsale Calcaire. In the norther part of the Rif, the Sebtide complex cropping out at the core of the Beni Mezala antiform suffered maximum paleo-temperatures derived from Raman parameters typical of greenschists facies, whereas in the flanks of the antiform the gap in temperatures between Lower Paleozoic (Silurian and Devonian) and Carboniferous Ghomarides probably reflect the temperatures peaks reached during Eo Variscan and Late Variscan phases. Moreover, our data suggest that one of the two analysed units in the Ghomarides always reached higher metamorphic conditions during both Variscan cycles. Further to the south, the increase in maximum temperatures towards the contact with the Beni-Bousera peridotite reflects an Alpine thermal overprinting, probably linked to slab retreat and delamination driven crustal anatexis, accompanied by magma emplacement during the last phases of the Alpine orogenesis.

The Rif Cordillera, an Alpine orogen in the Western Mediterranean, was developed by the interaction of Eurasian and African (Nubia) plates. Neotectonic deformations of the Rif foreland influence the relief, especially in post-nappe basins and their boundaries with Jurassic and Cretaceous carbonate mountain massifs, and they contribute to highlighting the recent evolution of the Cordillera. The topographic and hydrological lineaments of these basins were characterised on the basis of multi-scale morphostructural data analysis, supported by digital mapping and GIS. They were correlated with geological structures, essentially with fractures. The outcrops of the Upper Tortonian and Messinian deposits depict well-defined geometric shapes with roughly rectilinear boundaries, as defined by their contacts with the massive and rigid rocks of the Jurassic and Cretaceous series. Upper Tortonian deposits evidence major regional N70°E and N40°E lineaments, which are obliquely intersected by late structures. Messinian N120°E and N25°E lineaments, associated with N140°E lineaments, are also recognised. The interpretation of these lineaments as faults indicates the activity of two systems of transtensive sinistral and then dextral brittle shearing that correspond to two episodes of neotectonic deformation that played a decisive role in shaping the reliefs of the Eastern Rif. These deformations are particularly relevant to isolate basins and likely have a key role during the closure of the South Rifian corridor during the Mediterranean Messinian Salinity crisis.

This research used a factorial model containing two levels and three variables to evaluate the partial substitution of sodium feldspar (albite) by a talc ore found in abundance in the region of Itaiacoca-Brazil. The model can also be used to verify the influence of initial talc particle size, proportion, and sintering threshold temperature on the following physical properties, such as linear shrinkage, water absorption, bulk density, total porosity, and firing color. In this study, the mechanical strength of the compositions was evaluated by the flexural strength test. The factorial model indicated the sintering temperature as the variable that most affects the samples' densification and the proportion of talc as the variable that changes the firing color. The experiment that used a higher sintering temperature combined with a coarser talc granulometry presented the highest mechanical strength. When more refined granulometry was used, there was the beginning of an overfire process. Water absorption values in the range of .04% and modulus of rupture of 49 MPa were obtained, confirming the talc's effectiveness as a secondary flux agent suitable for the formulation of ceramic bodies.
