Evidence-practice gaps in lung cancer: A scoping review

Abstract: Lung cancer is a significant international health problem. Aligning clinical practice with evidence-based guideline recommendations has the potential to improve patient outcomes. This scoping review describes evidence-practice gaps across the diagnostic and management care pathway for lung cancer. We conducted searches of online databases Medline, PsychInfo, Cinahl and the Cochrane Library to identify studies published between 2008 and 2012. Of 614 articles screened, 65 met inclusion criteria. We identified se… Show more

“…Despite using conventional chemotherapy regimens and radiotherapy against cancer cells; because of emerging drug resistant stemness cells, relapses and metastasis, lung cancer treatment have been faced with many obstacles in many developed and developing countries of the world. To overcome these challenges in the treatment of lung cancer, use of natural compounds and supplements like beta-glucan has received much attention for their beneficial properties (Rankin et al, 2018).…”

“…Indeed, there are significant evidence gaps in many aspects of lung cancer early diagnosis and management. Rankin et al (2018) tackle "evidencepractice gaps" in lung cancer; there is disconnect between "best practice" and "actual practice" in many areas of health care-given the huge global burden of lung cancer, it is especially important to improve the evidence base, and encourage practice which is compliant with this evidence. Their review highlights challenges across the lung cancer journey-including timely diagnosis and referral, underutilisation of available treatments, psychosocial support and multidisciplinary team management.…”
