“…Similar effects of other viruses were described previously (Carrillo-Tripp et al, 2016). In beekeeping practice, it is generally accepted that most diseases, which are not directly linked with mites, occur (Zheng, Gong, Huang, & Sohr, 2015). Here, we did not find indications for pronounced synergism between DWV and N. ceranae.…”

“…Unfortunately, not much is known about the localization and tissue tropism of LSV, which could help explain its association with the intestinal parasites. A recent study indicated that the presence of the intestinal parasite N. ceranae promotes the proliferation of DWV, especially under nutritional stress (Zheng, Gong, Huang, & Sohr, ). Here, we did not find indications for pronounced synergism between DWV and N. ceranae .…”

“…The order of infection seems to be important; prior N. ceranae infection inhibited subsequent DWV infection but this was not reciprocal, suggesting asymmetry in the competitive interaction between these pathogens (Doublet et al ., ). In another experiment, N. ceranae fed to emerging bees from a DWV‐infected colony appeared to accelerate DWV replication at early stages of viral infection in a dose‐dependent manner, but not once DWV titers reached a plateau (Zheng et al ., ). However, the discrepancies among these studies could be attributed to differences in the methodologies applied to determine the viral load, such as the analysis of a specific tissue or the whole bee.…”

“…There are e.g. synergic effects between N. ceranae and DWV on honeybee health, which is dependent, in some cases, on pathogen titers and pollen nutrition (Zheng et al, 2015). Similarly, there were only seven cases (7/467) of mixed infections of N. ceranae and L. passim (Figure 4).…”
