Evidence of Single State Dominance in the Two-Neutrino Double- β Decay of Se82 with CUPID-0

Abstract: We report on the measurement of the two-neutrino double-β decay of 82 Se performed for the first time with cryogenic calorimeters, in the framework of the CUPID-0 experiment. With an exposure of 9.95 kg yr of Zn 82 Se, we determine the two-neutrino double-β decay half-life of 82 Se with an unprecedented precision level, T 2ν 1=2 ¼ ½8.60 AE 0.03ðstatÞ þ0.19 −0.13 ðsystÞ × 10 19 yr. The very high signal-to-background ratio, along with the detailed reconstruction of the background sources allowed us to identify t… Show more

“…Despite the low probability for this process to happen, double beta decay has been already observed for 12 nuclei, with typical half-lives in the range of 10 18 -10 24 yr [2]. “…The combination of scintillating bolometers and high Q ββ value emitters was developed by the LUCIFER [34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41] and LUMINEU [42][43][44][45][46][47][48] projects, as well as by the AMoRE Collaboration [49]. The outcomes of LUCIFER and LUMINEU were two medium-scale demonstrators, CUPID-0 [3,4,19,[50][51][52] and CUPID-Mo [21,48,53,54] respectively. Thanks to the high collected statistics, CUPID-0 proved that the technique of scintillating bolometers allows to suppress the α background by about 3 orders of magnitude, matching the CUPID requirements.…”

“…The CUPID-0 background model (BM) has been exploited also to measure the 2νDBD of 82 Se with unprecedented precision and accuracy: T 2ν 1/2 = [8.60 ± 0.03(stat) +0.19 −0.13 (stat)] × 10 19 yr [15]. In this work, we test two different nuclear models for the 2νDBD, which can be described as a sequence of two virtual β decays going through one or more states of the (A,Z+1) intermediate nucleus.…”
