Evidence of Similar Idiotypic Determinants on Different Rheumatoid Factor Populations

Abstract: Strong idiotypic antigens were detected both in monoclonal and polyclonal rheumatoid factors (RF) by applying idiotype‐specific antisera. Shared idiotypic antigens were found between some polyclonal and monoclonal RF as well as between certain IgG and IgM RF.

“…Typical association constants for IgM or IgG, RFs average between 1 X 104, 5 X 105 L/M (23,24), which is 10-to 100-fold less than the affinities ofheteroantibodies produced following exogenous immunization. In addition, we (17) and others (25), have observed the major RCRI in high frequency in RA both at the cellular and serologic level employing polyclonal antimajor RCRI antibodies (17,18).…”

“…(24). They reported that although both Wa-and Po-like CRI patterns were present among the polyclonal RF of RA patients, additional CRI were also found.…”

“…However, while the Wa and Po CRI have been detected in polyclonal rheumatoid factors present in the sera of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (21)(22)(23)(24), the amounts of these CRI are quite modest. Extensive serologic analyses of polyclonal rheumatoid factors from patients with rheumatoid arthritis show them to be diverse, and that the common idiotypes ofthe mixed cryoglobulin rheumatoid factors account for only a minor population (25,26).…”
