Evidence of protective role of Ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation in reducing COVID-19 deaths

Abstract: Prior studies indicate the protective role of Ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation in human health, mediated by vitamin D synthesis. In this observational study, we empirically outline a negative association of UVB radiation as measured by ultraviolet index (UVI) with the number of COVID-19 deaths. We apply a fixed-effect log-linear regression model to a panel dataset of 152 countries over 108 days (n = 6524). We use the cumulative number of COVID-19 deaths and case-fatality rate (CFR) as the main dependent variables… Show more

“…These latitude associations will of course change as we go through the seasons. They imply an effect of ultraviolet light and this has been supported by a further study showing an association between UVB exposure and COVID-19 mortality across 152 countries [50]. This could be mediated by a direct effect of viral killing by UVB in the environment but is also compatible with an effect mediated by vitamin Dthe latter would of course fit with the link between COVID-9 severity and ethnicity, whereas the former would not.…”

“…These data suggest that there are benefits from UV light independently of vitamin D formation in reducing COVID-19 mortality. Benefits for the UVB component of sunlight have also been reported, in which a negative association between the UV Index and COVID-19 deaths were observed in data from 152 countries using modeling that considered other potential effects of local weather (e.g., temperature, humidity) across January–May 2020 ( 49 ). Beneficial inverse associations between COVID-19 severity or death and local ambient UV levels or annual mean sunlight hours were also observed in Spain ( 50 ) and France ( 51 ), respectively, although this French study has been critiqued for the statistical approach undertaken ( 52 ).…”

“…Recent observational and clinical studies show that vitamin D deficiency might be linked to incidence 5 8 , severity 7 , 9 and mortality 10 12 associated with COVID-19 13 . Emerging studies also show that vitamin D and its primary source Ultraviolet-B radiation (UVB) may play a protective role in mitigating COVID-19 deaths 14 . Limited hours of sunlight and dense cloud cover 15 limit the intensity of UVB radiation, mitigating its protective role 14 during the monsoon season.…”
