Evidence of Population Declines among Common Eiders Breeding in the Belcher Islands, Northwest Territories

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Information regarding the status of common eiders Somateria mollissima breeding in the Canadian Arctic is sorely lacking. In 1997, we surveyed five island archipelagoes in the Belcher Islands in Hudson Bay (56˚00' -57˚30'N, 79˚30' -80˚00'W) from 3 to 23 July. Our results were compared with eider surveys of the same islands completed between 1985 and 1989 using a standard protocol. We found 1416 eiders on 431 islands. Most (94.1%) were found while the female was still incubating. In all five island gr… Show more

“…Inuit hunters are providing important observations on these changes that have subsequently been confirmed by scientific surveys (e.g., Robertson and Gilchrist 1998;Mallory et al 2003). While much of our evidence is presently circumstantial, the observations and oral reports documented here lay the baseline for directed surveys to confirm distributional extensions.…”

“…They may even nest in association with one another (Kistchinski and Flint, 1974;Götmark and Åhlund, 1988;Robertson and Gilchrist, 1998). Thus, surveys designed to assess the nesting density of one of these species should reliably assess all three (Komdeur et al, 1992).…”

“…Clearly, island-by-island comparisons that recorded gains and losses between the two study periods would have been a much more powerful test. We were able to make this comparison with common eider data (Robertson and Gilchrist, 1998).…”

“…In the last decade, declines in the populations of Common Eider (Somateria mollissima) have been documented in various regions of the north, such as Hudson Bay, the Beaufort Sea, and western Greenland (Robertson and Gilchrist 1998;Suydam et al 2000;Merkel 2004). Factors identified as causing these declines include human disturbance, over-harvesting, and climatic events.…”
