Evidence of exposure to SARS-CoV-2 in cats and dogs from households in Italy

Abstract: SARS-CoV-2 originated in animals and is now easily transmitted between people. Sporadic detection of natural cases in animals alongside successful experimental infections of pets, such as cats, ferrets and dogs, raises questions about the susceptibility of animals under natural conditions of pet ownership. Here we report a large-scale study to assess SARS-CoV-2 infection in 817 companion animals living in northern Italy, sampled at a time of frequent human infection. No animals tested PCR positive. However, 3.… Show more

“…Among the 15 positive cat sera, 11 serum samples had various titers of SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies; the authors did not detect any serological cross-reactivity between the SARS-CoV-2 and FIPV. Recently, a large-scale study involving 500 companion animals (dogs and cats) living in COVID-19positive andnegative households in Northern Italy reported measurable SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibody titers in 3.4% dogs and 3.9% cats [73]. These reports support the notion of human-to-animal transmission (reverse zoonosis or zooanthroponosis) of SARS-CoV-2.…”

“…There are several instances of SARS-CoV-2 infection in domestic dogs living in households with COVID-19 positive human residents [69,70]. Nasal swabs collected from two asymptomatic pet dogs living in close proximity with COVID-19 positive owners tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 RNA and antibodies, with genetic sequencing confirming human-to-animal transmission [69].…”

“…In a study from Italy, viral RNA was not detected in nasopharyngeal, nasal and/or rectal swabs from 839 pet dogs and cats, including 76 animals with clinical signs of respiratory disease. Of the tested animals, 14% were from households with COVID-19 (20). Serum neutralizing antibodies was detected in 3-4% of animals, although a higher proportion of serologically-positive dogs were from COVID-19 vs. non-COVID-19 households.…”
