Background: Idiopathic scoliosis, which accounts for the 80-85% of all lateral spine curvatures, distorts the chest wall anatomy and results in functional pulmonary disability. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate the pulmonary function in patients with asymptomatic idiopathic scoliosis and matched controls and to study the correlation between the degree of spinal deformity (Cobb's angle) and pulmonary function test (PFT) parameters. Materials and Methods: This study included 35 (27 males and 8 females) patients with idiopathic scoliosis in the age group of 15-30 years, with mean Cobb's angle 62°. Standing anteroposterior X-rays of the spine were taken. The radiographs were assessed and angle of curvature was measured by the Cobb's method. PFT parameters were recorded and compared with matched controls, and their correlation with Cobb's angle was studied. The data were analyzed with the Student's unpaired t-test and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results: Pulmonary parameters such as tidal volume, vital capacity (VC), forced VC (FVC), forced expiratory volume in first second (FEV 1 ), maximum mid-expiratory flow rate, peak expiratory flow rate, and maximum voluntary ventilation were significantly reduced in scoliosis patients than controls, and they were inversely correlated with Cobb's angle. However, the mean FEV 1 /FVC ratio at rest in scoliosis patients was within normal limits and the ratio was not correlated with Cobb's angle. Conclusion: Thus, it can be concluded that patients with idiopathic scoliosis show reduced lung volumes and capacity on PFT and the pulmonary parameters show strong inverse correlation with the severity of the spinal deformity (Cobb's angle).

Scoliosis may be of varied etiology and associated with severe congenital anomalies. Scoliosis repair is a major orthopaedic surgery associated with intraoperative excessive blood loss and severe postoperative pain. The use of intraoperative neuromonitoring during scoliosis surgery has become common place to reduce the risk of potentially postoperative neurologic deficits. Intraoperative neuromonitoring techniques include somatosensory evoked potentials, motor evoked potentials, and intraoperative wake-up tests. Anaesthetic management in these patients should focus primarily on associated comorbidities and congenital anomalies affecting the course of the perioperative management. Key words: Scoliosis, anesthesia, motor evoked potentials, somatosensory evoked potentials. ÖZETSkolyozun çeşitli nedenleri vardır ve ciddi konjenital anomalilerle birlikte olabilir. Skolyoz onarımı intraoperatif aşırı kan kaybı ve ciddi postoperatif ağrı ile sonuçlanabilen önemli bir ortopedik cerrahidir. Skolyoz cerrahisi sırasında intraoperatif sinir monitörizasyonu kullanımı potansiyel postoperatif nörolojik defisit riskini azaltmak için ortak bir prosedür haline gelmiştir. İntraoperatif sinir monitörizasyonu teknikleri somatosensoriyel uyarılmış potansiyeller, motor uyarılmış potansiyeller ve intraoperatif uyandırma testlerini içerir. Bu hastaların anestezi yönetiminde operasyonun seyrini etkileyen komorbidite ve konjenital anomalilere öncelikle odaklanmak gerekmektedir. Badaniami objęto grupę 30 dziewcząt w wieku 9-18 lat z rozpoznanym bocznym idiopatycznym skrzywieniem kręgosłupa. Oceniono rozwój kręgosłupa na podstawie testu Rissera i oznaczono stopnie jego kostnienia. Pacjentki poddano wstępnemu badaniu oceny postawy, a następnie wykonano badanie czynnościowe układu oddechowego i oznaczono wybrane parametry. Po upływie 4-5 tygodni badania powtó-rzono. W okresie między badaniami pacjentki objęto leczeniem specjalistyczną metodą asymetrycznych ćwiczeń oddechowych. Zaobserwowano istotny statystycznie wzrost każdego z mierzonych parametrów czynnościowych układu oddechowego pod wpływem zastosowanej metody rehabilitacji. Prowadzenie gimnastyki leczniczej w postaci ćwiczeń asymetrycznych oddechowych wg Dobosiewicz ma wysoce istotny wpływ na poprawę wszystkich mierzonych parametrów czynnościowych układu oddechowego już w krótkim okresie po jej intensywnym zastosowaniu.Słowa kluczowe: skolioza, badania czynnościowe układu oddechowego, metoda Dobosiewicz, leczenie zachowawcze. Abstract:Issues concerning scoliosis in youths are still an important problem since if they are untreated they may have serious health-related consequences in the future. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of asymmetric breathing exercises according to Dobosiewicz (modified Lehnert-Schroth method) on ventilation capability of lungs in girls with scoliosis. The research group consisted of 30 girls aged 9 to 18 with diagnosed scoliosis. The spine's development was assessed by means of the Risser test and the degrees of its ossification were marked. Body posture was evaluated at the beginning, a functional examination of the respiratory system was carried out and chosen parameters were marked. After 4-5 weeks the tests were repeated again. Between the tests the patients participated in the treatment employing the specialist method of asymmetric breathing exercises. The authors observed a statistically significant increase of the examined functional parameters of the respiratory system under the influence of the applied method.
