In French Guiana, the Montagne d'Or gold deposit (5 Moz at 1.5 g/t Au) is located in the northern branch of the Rhyacian Paramaca Greenstone Belt. The sulphide deposit is hosted by a south-facing bimodal volcanic and volcaniclastic sequence that is highly strained and affected by a penetrative E-W striking and steeply southdipping foliation.The volcanic sequence is composed of three members, (1) the Lower unit in the stratigraphic footwall, (2) a bimodal mafic-felsic formation hosting the orebody, and (3) the Upper sedimentary and volcanic rocks unit in the stratigraphic hanging-wall. The bimodal formation is dominated by calc-alkaline felsic volcanic rocks in the west, interbedded/interdigitated with tholeiitic mafic rocks in the east. Pillowed mafic flows and graded-bedded felsic volcaniclastic rocks collectively indicate effusive to explosive volcanic activity in a submarine environment. The mineralization consists of thick and laterally extensive sulphide zones forming (1) stratiform sulphide disseminations, (2) structurally-transposed stringer stockworks, and (3) thin layers of deformed semi-massive sulphides. The gold-rich sulphide mineralization consists mainly of pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite with minor sphalerite, magnetite, galena and arsenopyrite, hosted by chlorite-sericite-rich alteration zones mainly developed in the felsic tuff facies.U-Pb zircon geochronology shows that most of the Montagne d'Or volcanic and intrusive sequence has crystallized during a multi-cycle magmatic event, from ca. 2152 Ma to ca. 2130 Ma. A porphyry intrusion crosscutting the ore yields a U-Pb zircon age of 2117.6 ± 5.1 Ma, hence constraining a minimum age for the auriferous sulphide mineralization. This also indicates that the sulphide mineralization was coeval with arc magmatism, demonstrating the volcanogenic nature of the Montagne d'Or gold deposit.

We describe the geological context of rare metal-bearing pegmatites from the Mangodara district (South-West Burkina Faso, Paleoproterozoic West African Craton) and discuss their petrogenesis and links with the host rocks. The Mangodara district exposes a gneiss-granitoid complex structured in a regional-scale dome, mantled by granodioritic gneiss enclosing rafts of amphibolite, micaschist and paragneiss, and cored by tonalitic to trondhjemitic gneisses. These gneisses enclose granitoid plutons, and four populations of rare metal-bearing pegmatites: titanite-allanite-, apatite-zircon-, garnetcolumbite (Li, Nb) and garnet-REE (Ti, Y, HREE)-bearing varieties.2 Rafts of migmatitic amphibolite, micaschist and paragneiss are chemically equivalent to nearby Birimian greenstone belts. An origin of the gneiss-granitoid complex by partial melting is suggested by diffuse contacts of rafts with the gneisses as well as the presence of garnet-bearing or hornblendebearing leucosome in paragneiss and in amphibolites, respectively. Textural continuity between pegmatites and granitic veins concordant to the foliation of the gneisses point to syntectonic segregation of the pegmatite-forming magmas.The compositions of gneisses and plutonic rocks spread between a Na-rich pole and a K-rich pole.Granodioritic gneiss, hornblende-biotite granodiorite and potassic biotite granitoids define a K-rich series attributed to relatively low-pressure high-degree partial melting of dominantly paragneiss, which accounts for low to absent LILE and HFSE fractionation compared to the paragneiss. Tonalitictrondhjemitic gneiss, a trondhjemite and a peraluminous two-mica tonalite belong to a Na-rich series characterized by low K content and strong depletion in REE and HFSE, which might reflect plagioclase clustering after partial melting at a relatively high pressure of amphibolite, and fractionation of HFSE-REE-bearing minerals.U-Pb dating of zircon from a titanite-allanite-bearing pegmatite at 2094.3 ± 8.8 Ma and of apatite from tonalitic-trondhjemitic gneiss, apatite-zircon-bearing pegmatite and granodioritic gneiss at 2094 ± 21 Ma, 2055 ± 20 Ma, and 2041 ± 33 Ma respectively, confirm that partial melting, melt segregation and crystallization-cooling occurred during the Eburnean orogeny.Based on these data, we propose that (i) titanite-allanite-and apatite-zircon-bearing pegmatites result from syntectonic segregation of residual melt during crystallization of the tonalitic-trondhjemitic gneiss, (ii) garnet-columbite-bearing pegmatites originate from syntectonic melt segregation from the migmatitic paragneiss, and (iii) garnet-REE-bearing pegmatites derive from segregation of a residual melt within the granodioritic gneiss.

Small‐scale artisanal mining is a vital sector of the economy of Burkina Faso. This activity, correctly regulated, remains essential for the population despite security issues since 2015. Exploration of new areas for gold mining in this condition is difficult but essential to continue extractive activities. It is, therefore, important to define viable corridors, with science‐based evidence for the good prospects, to support artisanal miners’ activities in a way that minimizes the environmental impact. We describe a remote sensing approach to study the structural control of expanding small‐scale artisanal gold activity at the Bouda site and define future mining corridors. This remote sensing approach can also mitigate and remedy environmental impacts. The Minimum Noise Fraction (MNF) is applied to Landsat images (7‐ETM+, 5‐TM, and 8‐OLI, respectively, for 2000, 2011, and 2022) to detect extraction sites and perform a spatiotemporal analysis of the expansion of areas affected by gold extraction. The near‐infrared and mid‐infrared bands of Landsat images significantly contribute to detecting extraction areas. A morphological study of the site over time and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) on Landsat 8‐OLI enable us to perform a lineament analysis. The expansion of mining activity is structurally controlled, as revealed by the correlation between gold occurrences and high lineament densities, especially in the dominant NE‐SW direction. These analyses suggest five potential prospecting corridors in the Bouda site.
