Evidence of a non-conservative mass transfer in the ultra-compact X-ray source XB 1916-053

Abstract: Context. The dipping source XB 1916-053 is a compact binary system with an orbital period of 50 min harboring a neutron star. It shows a positive and a negative superhump, which suggests the presence of a precessing elliptic accretion disk tilted with respect to the equatorial plane of the system. The orbital ephemeris indicates a large orbital period derivative, Ṗ/P = 1.53 × 10−7 yr−1, that can be explained assuming a high non-conservative mass transfer rate. Finally, the spectrum shows prominent absorption l… Show more

“…Although no negative superhump signal is detected in the 4U 1820-30 NICER observations, based on the similarity between 4U 1820-30 and X 1916-053, we expect that 4U 1820-30 is also probably a permanent superhump system. If so, then from the equation derived by Iaria et al (2021), the nodal precession frequency can be expressed as…”

“…where b 1 is the distance between the NS and the Lagrange point, L 1 , of the binary system and a is the binary separation, which has an accuracy of 0.5% for q between 0.0025 and 0.11 (Iaria et al 2021). The circularization radius R circ can be estimated from (see e.g., Frank et al 2002):…”
