Evidence from precise earthquake hypocenters for segmentation of the San Andreas Fault in San Gorgonio Pass

Abstract: We use precise hypocenter patterns and focal mechanisms to investigate the presence or absence of a continuous strike‐slip fault at depth connecting the San Bernardino strand of the San Andreas fault with the Coachella Valley segment of the Banning fault. We inverted 560,000 arrival times from 23,000 earthquakes (1981–1993) for high‐quality hypocenters and three‐dimensional P wave velocity structure in a 1° by 2° area centered on the San Gorgonio Pass. Cross‐sectional plots of relocated earthquakes reveal an a… Show more

“…The North Palm Springs (model NPS) earthquake occurred on the boundary between two regions with maximum earthquake depths that differ by 5 km (Magistrale and Sanders, 1996). The fault plane dips to the northeast and bottoms into the corner of the step in earthquake hypocenters.…”

“…Also, ancient slip in the San Andreas fault zone has juxtaposed different rock types [Magistrale and Sanders, 1996]. Both of these produce discontinuities in the San Jacinto fault zone.…”

“…This suggests that the aspects of segment bound structure imaged in this study do not straddle the boundary but rather lie to one side or the other along strike. Where seismicity is most abundant along the southern San Andreas fault, namely, in the San Bernardino-San Gorgonio region, stress segmentation on the basis of focal mechanism variability is most refined [Jones, 1988;Wyss and Zhong, 1995;Seeber and Armbruster, 1995;Magistrale and Sanders, 1996]. This stretch of the San Andreas has a high density of segment bounds and few unpaired high scattering gradients.…”
