“…CB-118 was the most abundant congener among the dl-PCBs for many thermal related sources, environmental matrices and biological samples (Kim et Zhao et al, 2006;Çok et al, 2007;Srogi, 2008). In this study, the concentration of CB-118 was also the highest one, followed by CB-105, CB-123, CB-156 and CB-77.…”

“…The PCB levels were one to two orders of magnitude higher than those obtained from some other areas in China, such as Beijing, Shenyang, Hong Kong, and Tibet Zhang et al, 2007). The levels were comparable to those found at a site for dismantling PCBcontaining equipment in Taizhou (Zhao et al, 2006b), and at the open-burning site in Guiyu (Wong et al, 2007b). However, they were lower than those detected at some heavily polluted sites (Priha et al, 2005;Herrick et al, 2007;Turrio-Baldassarri et al, 2007).…”

“…There were some simple household e-waste recycling workshops dealing with the disposal of electric power capacitors or transformers which contained PCBs. Previous studies also reported the presence of lower chlorinated PCB congeners in soils collected from the vicinity of an illegal trading and dismantling site for PCB-containing equipment in this area (Zhao et al, 2006b). These results suggested that the major source of farmland soil PCBs in this area might be atmospheric transportation and deposition of less chlorinated PCBs such as Aroclor 1242 and 1254, which have higher proportions of tri-through hexa-CB congeners.…”

“…The potentially hazardous recycling processes in Taizhou included the unprotected manual removal of printer cartridge toner, the open burning of wires and printed wiring boards to recover metals, the dismantling of electric power appliances, and the use of strong acid baths to retrieve gold from chips and other components ( Figure S1, Supporting Information). These unregulated salvaging operations and optional dumping of the residual waste have resulted in severe pollution (6). Accordingly, there is a large data gap surrounding how the environment is influenced by the growing e-waste recycling industry.…”
