Evidence for the spin-0 nature of the Higgs boson using ATLAS data

Abstract: Studies of the spin and parity quantum numbers of the Higgs boson are presented, based on proton–proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The Standard Model spin–parity JP=0+JP=0+ hypothesis is compared with alternative hypotheses using the Higgs boson decays H→γγH→γγ, H→ZZ⁎→4ℓH→ZZ⁎→4ℓ and H→WW⁎→ℓνℓνH→WW⁎→ℓνℓν, as well as the combination of these channels. The analysed dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.7 fb−1 collected at a centre-of-mass energy of √s=8TeV. For th… Show more

“…This program is an extension of HDECAY [93,94], which computes these observables within the SM 4 In this case, the expression for the h → bb EFT decay rate is obtained by applying a scaling of the tree-level prediction. The scaling factor is the same as that used in the SM, and includes the massless QCD corrections up to Oðα 4 s Þ [95][96][97][98][99][100][101][102][103].…”

“…Within the current experimental precision, the coupling strengths of this particle appear to be consistent with the standard model (SM) Higgs boson [3][4][5][6][7]. With both theoretical and experimental developments, a significant improvement in the precision of the determination of the Higgs couplings is expected at the LHC during the high luminosity (HL) phase [8].…”

“…Data strongly favour a spin 0, CP even particle [33][34][35], and confirms that its coupling to other particles is related to their mass in the way predicted by the standard model Higgs mechanism, earning the particle the name the Higgs boson (as opposed to initial discussions of a "Higgs like particle"). However, despite this success, its couplings are still imprecisely measured.…”

“…The next steps for both experiments are to refine their results, and to further determine the properties of this new particle. Recent results suggest the discovered boson is compatible with a spin-0, CP -even particle [36,37]. However, more work is needed to confirm the discovery of the Higgs in the fermionic decay channels.…”
