Evidence for the natural occurrence of zeatin and derivatives: compounds from maize which promote cell division.

Abstract: Three laboratories previously have obtained from Zea mays kernels (milk stage) one or more 6-(substituted)aminopurines capable of greatly promoting cell division in plant tissue cultures.1-3 At least two of the laboratories have worked on a single compound4 which has been identified as 6-(4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-2-enyl)aminopurine.5 The name zeatin has been applied to this particular compound.6 Only a small portion of the total cell-division activity in crude extracts from kernels seems to be due to zeatin'-3 an… Show more

“…In addition, these media hardened with a blue color, possibly indicating chelation of certain ions in the media by 8-quinolinol sulfate. Kinetin-treated tobacco callus gave maximal growth at 1 ALM, coinciding with published results (15), while soybean callus evidenced an approximate linear increase in weight with concentration over the range 0.1 to 10 AM, also characteristic for this test (13,16). In the moss protonemata assay, buds formed in the presence of kinetin are numerous and seen as erect plantlets, while on 8-quinolinol sulfate buds are either not present or are very young and almost indistinguishable from branch primordia.…”

“…Aliquots (1-5 ,tl) were then withdrawn for injection onto the column. Miller (20,21), who also recognized the possibility of degradation arising from the production of heat during elution steps (20). To overcome these problems in our study, special techniques were used to prevent the accumulation of heat during elution.…”

“…An active component in the extracts has been identified as trans-ribosylzeatin, trans-RZ2 (Fig. 1), in the case of immature fruit (16,17,20) and chicory root (2), and as its dihydro derivative in the case of Lupin (14) (see review by Kende (12) for a more detailed account). Recently Dyson and Hall (5) reported the presence of i6Ado in an extract of an autonomous strain of tobacco tissue.…”
