“…Natural samples in which amphibole was analyzed were all erupted from Shiveluch Volcano in the Kamchatkan arc. For full descriptions of samples besides the 3600 BP tephra, the reader is directed to Goltz et al (2020); descriptions of the tephra may be found in Volynets et al (1997) and Ponomareva et al (2007). To summarize, all but samples 04L, 16B, and the 3600 BP tephra are amphibole and olivine-phyric quenched liquid cognate xenoliths (mafic enclaves) with basaltic to basaltic andesite bulk compositions that were erupted in pyroclastic flows mostly composed of andesite.…”

“…The 3600 BP tephra is one of two basaltic tephra erupted from Shiveluch and contains amphibole and phlogopite phenocrysts. The composition of this tephra has been hypothesized to be representative of a magmatic composition parental to the less magnesian mafic enclaves (e.g., Volynets et al, 1997;Goltz et al, 2020). Both the tephra and mafic enclaves show evidence for co-existence of high Mg# amphibole (i.e., Mg#>74) and high forsterite olivine (i.e., Fo 90-92 ), which implies crystallization from a super-hydrous primary magma, with an estimated primary magmatic water content ranging up to 10 wt% H 2 O. Magmas at Shiveluch are primarily products of flux melting of the mantle overlying the subducting Pacific plate.…”

“…In arcs, H 2 O contents inferred from melt inclusions or mineral hygrometers are sometimes used to place first order constraints on saturation pressures (e.g. Plank et al, 2013;Blundy & Cashman, 2005;Goltz et al, 2020). However, even in very H 2 O-rich melts, the non-vertical orientation of isobars at high H 2 O contents indicates that CO contents still have an important role in determining the saturation pressure (Fig.…”

“…The average temperature over the twentieth century was 1002 ± 22 °C. b The temperature range at Mayon calculated using multiple mineral thermometers from Putirka (2008) and separated in core + whole rock (WR), and rim + matrix glass (MG) Krawczynski et al 2012), which can be easily achieved at deeper storage zones (Melekhova et al 2017;Goltz et al 2020). We used the hornblende composition reported in Newhall (1977) and the geobarometer (Eq.…”
