Evidence for Relationships Between Hope, Resilience, and Mental Health Among Youth

Abstract: Predictive modeling was used to evaluate the associations between hope, resilience, happiness, and mental health in 449 middle and high school students. Model results indicated large effect sizes for middle school (R2 = .28) and high school (R2 = .36) participants, with hope and resilience tending to predict self‐reported mental health symptoms. These findings and their application to counseling practice are explained.

“…Hope may also play a vital role in setting one's purpose in life, thereby, potentially supporting well-being (Ciarrochi et al, 2007;Burrow et al, 2010;Parker et al, 2015;Årdal et al, 2018). Hope is also related to various factors such as life satisfaction (Munoz et al, 2017), resilience (Li et al, 2016;Lenz, 2021), academic achievement (Marques et al, 2011(Marques et al, , 2017Bryce et al, 2020), and subjective well-being (Zhang and Chen, 2018). Further, in the existing literature, significant associations have been found between hope, emotional well-being (Griggs and Crawford, 2017), and psychological well-being (Dilmaç and Kocaman, 2019).…”

“…Other protective individual factors that can be linked to resilience are hope and dreams for oneself and one's family, including the possibility of a better financial and social life, a future, and opportunities to travel home. Lenz (2021) underlines that the expression of social hope, happiness with a focus on the future, plays a significant role in resilience among youth. Before migration, media as television in their home counties invariably led IENs to believe in their dreams of a better life: a place where they could be happy without struggles.…”

“…Today, such a problem as internet addiction is also gaining relevance. Statistics show that only 8.4% of young people do not have this addiction, and 10.6% have a strong addiction [12,13,18].…”
