In the past decade, due to the experimental observation of many charmonium-like states, there has been a revival of hadron spectroscopy. In particular, the experimental observation of charged charmonium-like, Z c states, and bottomonium-like, Z b states, represents a challenge since they can not be accommodated within the naive quark model. These charged states are good candidates of either tetraquark or molecular states and their observation motivated a vigorous theoretical activity. This is a rapidly evolving field with enormous amount of new experimental information. In this work, we review the current experimental progress and investigate various theoretical interpretations of these candidates of the multiquark states. The present review is written from the perspective of the QCD sum rules approach, where we present the main steps of concrete calculations and compare the results with other approaches and with experimental data.

We study the production of the exotic charged charmoniumlike state Z AE c ð3900Þ in pp collisions through the sequential process ψð4260Þ → Z AE c ð3900Þπ ∓ , Z AE c ð3900Þ → J=ψπ AE . Using the subsample of candidates originating from semi-inclusive weak decays of b-flavored hadrons, we measure the invariant mass and natural width to be M ¼ 3902.6 þ5.2 −5.0 ðstatÞ þ3.3 −1.4 ðsystÞ MeV and Γ ¼ 32 þ28−21 ðstatÞ þ26 −7 ðsystÞ MeV, respectively. We search for prompt production of the Z AE c ð3900Þ through the same sequential process. No significant signal is observed, and we set an upper limit of 0.70 at the 95% credibility level on the ratio of prompt production to the production via b-hadron decays. The study is based on 10.4 fb −1 of pp collision data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider.

We present a dynamical approach for description of the multi-quark states that is based on an effective interaction Lagrangian describing the coupling of hadrons to their constituent quarks. First, we explore the consequences of treating the X(3872) meson as a tetraquark bound state. We calculate the decay widths of the observed channels and conclude that for reasonable values of the size parameter of the X(3872) one finds consistency with the available experimental data. Then we have critically checked the tetraquark picture for the Z c (3900) state by analyzing its strong decays. We found that Z c (3900) has a much more stronger coupling to DD * than to J/ψπ that is in discord with experiment. As an alternative we have employed a molecular-type four-quark current to describe the decays of the Z c (3900) state as the charged particle in the isotriplet. We found that a molecular-type current gives the values of the above decays in accordance with the experimental observation. By using moleculartype four-quark currents for the recently observed resonances Z b (10610) and Z b (10650), we have calculated their two-body decay rates into a bottomonium state plus a light meson as well as into B-meson pairs. *
