Evidence for growth-promoting effects of Omega n −3 fatty acids alone and in combination with a specific vitamin and mineral complex in rat neuroblastoma cells

Abstract: The beneficial effects of Omega n - 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n - 3 PUFA) in situations of cognitive impairment may be associated with enhanced neuronal growth. Since neuronal growth is impaired in n - 3 PUFA deficiency, and enhanced by certain vitamins and trace elements, the effects of n - 3 PUFA, vitamin and mineral cell complex (VMC) and their association on neuronal growth were investigated in cultured rat neuroblastoma cells. Treatment of cells for 3 days with n - 3 PUFA significantly enhanced neuri… Show more

“…Treatment of PC12 cells for 3 days with n-3 PUFA significantly enhances neurite length without affecting the number of neurites (Shrivastava et al , 2005). DHA also induces neurite outgrowth in cells beginning as early as 2 h post-DHA supplementation and throughout differentiation.…”

“…DHA supplementation increased neurite outgrowth and neurite branching in embryonic hippocampal cultures from rats [118] and mice [119], and in neuronal cultures derived from mouse embryonic stem cells [120]. A combination of omega-3 PUFAs and multiple vitamins and minerals was more effective in promoting neurite outgrowth in neuroblastoma cells (measured as average neurite length and the number of neurites per cell) compared with either omega-3 PUFAs or vitamins plus minerals alone [121]. Enrichment of cell culture medium with a combination of vitamins B 1 , B 6 , and B 12 increased neurite outgrowth from dorsal root ganglia [122].…”

“…Antioxidants reduce ROS-induced damage and stabilize membranes, suppressing synaptic loss. In vitro studies with PUFAs combined with a vitamin and mineral complex, or supplementation with a vitamin-B complex (B 1 , B 6 , and B 12 ) have been shown to increase neurite formation [46,47]. Administration of multiple nutrients (including DHA, choline, uridine, and Bvitamins) promotes receptor-mediated (e.g., P 2 Y and syntaxin) synthesis of synaptic membranes and neurite outgrowth [48].…”
