The variation in co-occurrence between pests may influence spatio-temporal persistence strategies of species, with implications for pest management. The co-occurrence of Anastrepha species (Diptera: Tephritidae) in papaya orchards was investigated in areas at different distances from a native forest reserve in Espírito Santo, Brazil, to investigate positive, negative, or random interactions, understood as potential coexistence, interspecific competition, or neutral interactions, respectively. Data were obtained from a papaya-growing area divided into three sub-areas -a buffer zone bordering the forest, neighbourhood 1, and neighbourhood 2 -and the co-occurrence results were compared with the entire area. The buffer zone along the protected native Atlantic Forest (semideciduous seasonal forest vegetation) was created to filter negative environmental impacts. Neighbourhood 1 was closer to the forest than neighbourhood 2. Based on a long-term dataset from 1998 to 2010, co-occurrence of fruit flies was investigated by comparing two periods: from 1998 to 2003, when a special pest management system was implemented, termed the systems approach, and from 2004 to 2010, showing the impact of this system on fruit fly diversity. The strength of interaction between species was also evaluated for significant co-occurrences. The patterns of co-occurrence and interaction of Anastrepha species were influenced by area and time. In all scenarios, only positive and random associations were observed, with Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann) and Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart) showing the most positive associations. Co-occurrence was greater in areas farther from the reserve. However, the strength of the interaction between the areas showed little variation. We concluded that the distance from the reserve and the pest management (systems approach) influenced co-occurrence, as species co-occurred much more frequently when collected far from the native forest. The impact during the period of the systems approach (1998-2003) provided fewer positive associations, but with stronger interactions over time. These results confirm that identifying pest co-occurrence distribution patterns in crops and the respective neighbourhoods can be helpful in improving strategies for pest management associated with a systems approach.

Hydrogenated cardanol derivatives were evaluated as potentially active insecticides/repellent agents against insect pests such as Liriomyza sativae (Diptera: Agromyzidae) and Bemisia tabaci biotype B (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae). Benzoylation, acetylation, and methylation were made on the hydrogenated cardanol aromatic ring to synthesize active ingredients with potential insecticide action. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectra (13C and 1H NMR) and infrared (IR) proposed the chemical elucidation of the products. The production of melon seedlings was made and each synthesized products, benzoylated 3-pentadecylphenol, acetylated 3-pentadecylphenol, and methylated 3-pentadecylphenol were applied to seedlings by glass sprayer. Phytotoxicity evaluations were carried out, noting that all the plants showed burnt leaves except for concentration of 1% which the leaves remained healthy look. The insecticidal efficacy as well as the repellent and dissuasive effects were evaluated by a completely randomized design (DIC) and a randomized complete block design (DBCA) with six treatments, five and four replicates respectively. The compounds derived from cardanol did not present insecticidal activity in DBCA for L. sativae; however, they had a noticeable effect on oviposition index (IPO). Ovicidal effect and nymphal mortality only were found for B. tabaci by methylated 3-pentadecylphenol and Mospilan® in terms of dissuasion and oviposition effects in the two bioassays evaluated and, methylated 3-pentadecyl showed a similar behavior as the effect of Abamectin® on the confinement test, with 53.5% - 65.4% repellence of adults, an important data to emphasize that the products synthesized from cardanol are promising in preventing the pests attack such as L. sativae and, B. tabaci.

An increase in the carbon dioxide concentration (CO2) in the atmosphere has occurred in recent years, influencing the different biological aspects of herbivorous insects. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of CO2 increase on the biological aspects of Liriomyza sativae Blanchard leafminer in melon plants. For this, two experiments were carried out: (i) to evaluate the effect of melon plants grown in CO2-enriched environments on the immature developmental stages of L. sativae and L. sativae adult longevity, and (ii) to verify the impact of increased CO2 concentration on L. sativae adult survival, feeding punctures, and oviposition. The experiments were carried out in growth chambers maintained in the temperature regime of 20-26-33 °C (simulating the minimum, average, and maximum daily temperature) and under two CO2 concentrations (400 ppm and 770 ppm). The immature stages and the egg-adult period of L. sativae were longer when they developed on plants grown in high CO2 levels (770 ppm), but no difference in adult longevity was observed. The viability of the immature phases was not different between the two CO2 concentrations. Furthermore, there was no difference in the number of eggs and feeding punctures between treatments. Thus, the increase in CO2 concentration prolongs the duration of the immature stages of L. sativae; however, it does not affect their viability. Adult survival, fertility, and feeding punctures were also unmodified by the environment enriched with CO2.
