Evidence for autotetraploidy in Plantago media and comparisons between natural and artificial cytotypes concerning cell size and fertility

Abstract: The hypothesis of autotetraploidy in Plantago media (2n =12 and 2n = 24) was tested. The two cytotypes are morphologically very similar. Rare 4X and 3X hybrids were obtained in inter-ploidy crosses. The reproductive isolation between 2X and 4X is post-zygotic and can be broken down and introduced by colchicine treatment. The studied diploid and tetraploid populations shared the same alleles for nine allozyme loci. Together this provides strong evidence for autotetraploid origin of tetraploid P. media. Fertilit… Show more

“…Selection against hybridization was maximum due to 100 hybrid inviability. This is not unrealistic as hybrids in interploidy crosses are often inviable or sterile (Woodell & Valentine, 1961;Kay, 1969;Johnston et al, 1980;van Dijk & van Delden, 1990).…”

“…Almost all triploid hybrids between the cytotypes are inviable because of endosperm collapse (van Dijk & van Delden, 1990). In an area in the Pyrenees where diploids and tetraploids are sympatric, the cytotypes are almost completely separated in flowering time (van Dijk, 1991;van Dijk ci' al., 1992).…”

“…As a result, the production of 2n gametes is now thought to be the commoner mode of origin of polyploid plants (Bringhurst, 1990;Lumaret & Barrientos, 1990;Van Dijk & Van Delden, 1990;Rabe & Haufier, 1992). Furthernnore, recent studies using cultivated material have shown the potential importance of 2n gamete production in breeding fodder crops (Hermsen, 1984c;Veilleux, 1985;Singh, Moss & Smartt, 1990;Lumaret, 1991;Bingham, Smith & Casler, 1991;Ramanna, 1992).…”

“…Heavier seeds in the tetraploids may be considered as a direct effect of polyploidy (Evans, 1967;Hague & Jones, 1987;Pfahler, Barnett & Luke, 1987;Feuerstein & Paul, 1990;Van Dijk & Van Delden, 1990). Moreover, in Galician Dactylis the bigger seeds produced by the tetraploids also generate bigger seedlings as compared to those of the diploids (in the same experimental conditions) (Maceira, unpublished data).…”

“…Indeed, competition experiments between diploids and closely related autopolyploids are extremely rare, possibly because natural sympatric populations, for which the autopolyploid origin of the polyploids has been clearly determined, have only rarely been detected (e.g. Lumaret, Bowman & Dyer, 1989;Lumaret & Barrientos, 1990;Van Dijk & Van Delden, 1990). Competition experiments between diploids and colchicine-induced autopolyploids (e.g.…”
